Specific gratitude etiquette

Hi all,

My boss just cut me a personal check for an extremely generous and gracious contribution toward my wedding gown. I originally intended on sending her a formal thank you card in the mail at the time of a gown purchase but 2 weeks have passed already and I'm still dress shopping. I may not even find a gown until months from now. Additionally, I work in my boss' home and I only see her for maybe 20min a day. I also collect the mail daily. All things considered, when/what do you think is proper etiquette to show my appreciation for such a gift and when is the maximum amount of time I should allow to pass? The wedding is Sept. 2016.

Specific gratitude etiquette

Every situation is different. Etiquette used to be based on a specific timeline but many factors can change that. I had something similar happen to me. My shower was originally supposed to be in January. It was postponed as a result of weather conditions. I had already received more than half the gifts by the time the shower was moved. I chose not to send formal thank you's until after the new shower date; which was now in February. Mostly everyone understood as the 'etiquette' for sending out thank you cards is up to 6 months. A few were annoyed to wait for a formal thank you. I just let it be at what it was. Unfortunately I've learned you can't make everyone happy. I'm sure if you explain to your boss that you haven't found your dress yet, she will understand why you haven't sent a formal thank you. Dress shopping is a process and takes time. I'm sure she knows how grateful you are for her generous gift. Good luck and hope that helps.
