i have a girl friend who's horrible at meeting guys. she's one of those terribly shy gals who depends on their gfs for the initial help. she's 28 years old and not getting any younger. she would like to find a guy who's looking for a serious relationship and not a serious fling. her mommy wants a nice greek boy so he's gotta be greek.
okay.. a friend brought the idea of Speed Dating. neither of us have ever been to one so i don't know what to expect. have any of you been to one? i hear there's a fee. t or f? and how much is it? how does the whole process go? and is there a speed dating night that's all greek?
i figure speed dating would open her up. have her gain the experience of talking to a guy and not be so shy about it.
TIA! shir

Re: Speed Dating
I never did the speed dating thing, but has she tried match.com or something like that? I meet my FH on match, I also meet alot of great people and she could specify in her profile that she is looking for someone greek or could even search out the greek guys. My cousin met her fiance on eharmony.

I've never did anything like that, but I'd have to say as a shy person myself, the whole idea of that would terrify me and I think it would be sooo uncomfortable!

i just spoke to her (literally) and she mentions her single gal pal also mentioned the same idea to her. she's definitely open to the idea which is great. this would give her the confidence to open up to a guy. plus she'll have her friend there so she won't be alone.
thank you for your concern.

That's cool that she's up for it. I'd imagine that it could be a good way to meet a number of people at once.
Good luck to her!

Re: Speed Dating
i tried it a couple of years ago with a friend - really to get her to go - it is eay to talk to people when you have to - i thought it was a good way to get to know people - i have a lot of trouble going up to a person iniatially but once you are seated right in front of them it is not that hard - you meet 8-10 people for 8-10 minutes each - the one i went to it was like $20 for appetizers and the 8 dates - but you had to buy drinks if you wanted them
My friend did this at the Central Park Boathouse for petlovers (people brought their dogs) which was also a good icebreaker. I think it was $40., it was 8 minutes. She got a few numbers from it. She did get it cancelled twice on her, as usually there aren't enough guys. Defniitely check it out though...or also try match.com or matchmaker.com. I met my FH on it!

Re: Speed Dating
I was on the internet... match.com and another site on and off for about 5 years... yes, starting to lose my mind. I must have met over 200 guys but only dated 2.
Then I tried speeddaating and met my DH. I will say, the first night was ... a lot of people who were a 'little weird'... socially not all together there... but as I see it it was better to meet them that way instead of e-mailing/calling back and forth for a week or two. I was debating on going to the next night and they raffled off a free ticket to the next one... I WON and DH was 'Guy #4'.
Speedating, in my opinion, is better because you know instantly or not if you have any attraction to the other person.

your experience definitely puts more of a positive spin on this topic. becuase, to be honest, i cringed at the idea of meeting so many different guys and feeling obligated and sorta forced to speak to him because you're on a time crunch. my letting her know of your experience would compell her to do this speed dating thing. thx!

Well, it really can go both ways. I met my FH online. She should try it, and if its not for her, try online dating. Especially if she is shy, online might be better for her because you don't have to talk face-to-face. Its much easier to open up when the other person isn't staring back at you.
