Spelling, Grammar and other lost arts...

Spelling, Grammar and other lost arts...

Does anyone else absolutely CRINGE when they see someone use what I call 'myspace spelling'?

I just got an e-mail from my niece. I am amazed at how INTENTIONALLY bad her spelling is. The whole note was peppered with things like 'relle' which is 'REALLY' and 'ur'. I also noted that she likes to add extra vowels for no apparent reason. Me becomes Mee and bye becomes Biiiye.

I swear my eyes and my head hurt after reading the letter.

And then I thought about the fact that my sons might one day think spelling incorrectly is kewl. Now my heart hurts too.

Does this aggravate ANYONE else?

So much.

Although I have been known to use extra letters for emphasis. Like when I loooooooooooooove someone. I also refer to TV as teevee.

And doing it intentionally because you're a kid and it's the 'cool' way to write is not nearly as bad as doing it because you're too stupid to know the correct way to use the language.

Such a good point. And I'd like to add that I've been known to emphasize a word by adding a vowel or two (or ten) but again that's just to emphasize. I do know how to spell the word.

I do it as a joke sometimes.
But my 17 year old cousin kills me. Kills me. I tell her that sometimes her comments make me one to cry. All I get is an LOLLLLLL.

I could have written this thread. As a matter of fact, I did b*tch to someone, somewhere, about my 14 year old niece who does the same.

And my 17 year old niece who was emailing me about her college scholarships and which schools she was accepted to... Still using the extra letters, no caps, intentionally misspelling things. I told her that I hoped whatever college she chooses, that they teach her how to spell.

It makes me cringe more when I see adults who have trouble with 'their, they're, and there,' 'were' and 'where' and 'then' and 'than'!!!! Cringe-worthy example: 'Any brides wear there hair down?'

Doesn't bother me at all. I am aware that I am a minority.

I admit it, I'm a spelling/grammar snob.
