Spin-off of invention thread...

Do you remember your earliest experiences with the internet/email and cell phones?

I got my first cell phone as a gift for Christmas, 1996! I was definitely the first person I knew to have one...

My first job had internet access (also in 96) but it was only on one computer station..We also had email, but it never worked properly...

My next job (in 1998) had it on all computers...

my dad had the 'Genie' where you put the phone handle in a special cradle for it to dial in. That was for his Apple IIGS or something

my first experience with the internet was on prodigy I'm guessing 94-95. I was on chat rooms even then. I can't remember when I had my first cell phone, but I know it was a motorola flip and pretty huge by today's standards.

Good question! My first experience with e-mail was at college. I thought it was the weirdest thing. It was a really old system called 'Kermit,' with a picture of Kermit the Frog on it. The whole school used it, but for a long time you couldn't send messages to anyone who wasn't enrolled at the school. I didn't see a website until 1996 at my job.

My first cell phone experience was with a Japanese friend's phone back in the mid-1990s. I didn't have a cell phone myself until a few months ago!

The first web-site I visited was a 'Titanic' site about the movie!

I remember car phones...You only had them if you had a really nice car and a lot of money!

First real access to the 'internet' as we know it today was in 1992-1993. I started via telnet in my school (college) playing MUDs and another internet game called CONQUEST (which is still alive and running today). My nick has been Xelindrya ever since.

I was late on the cell phone... Still I had it before my techie friends haha Nokia 400. Cost so much to keep!!!! Something like $.35 a minute plus $.02 connect charge!??

ETA: not a whole lot of 'sites' to visit back then!!! lol

1993 WebCon New Orleans I was so very much THERE DUDE (OMG I was/am such a freaking geek!)

my first internet experience was probably in 94. We had a computer in our Library at school that had it. You had to get special permission to use it, and it could only be for specific school related stuff. As far as cel phones, no one I know had one until 96 or so, but I remember thinking it was so cool that my aunt had a car phone. She called us once from the road, it was the highlight of my day. That was in the 80's

Been there... done that. In fact Xelindrya and myself used to chat way back when in the early 90s through these good ole telnet sessions & chat rooms. Hehehehehe.

Small world out there.

My first internet experience was probably at my friend's house in 1995-96, when I was in high school. I didn't have e-mail until I started college in 1997.

GOD i would have DIED!! (literally)
My game revolved around a 24 hour clock. Midnight was 'new years' in the kingdom. You had to be online at four specific times through the day for 'housekeeping' - gain extra moves, cycle crops.

I woke up went into the lab (computer lab was just below the cafeteria next to my dorm) and log in. I'd be on until a little past 1pm then go for lunch, come back at 2 be on until 10pm (closing) and linger till 11pm, then go over to a friends place and log in for my 12am 'new years' then go home and sleep around 1am. I had 6 places to 'hang' for my 12am hour of internet. All dorms were 'internet ready' haha. Sleep until 6am, the up and at it again.

haha I was the first 'chic' ever to reach Queen status in the game! I met the designers (two guys) one of which is still a good friend. The group still meets annually to catch up. Currently I am a titan demi-god on this game. I can't imagine what I would have done, if they made do SCHOOL-WORK and sign in!!

Ick!

I still have an older copy of the EXE file lying around that doesn't require a registration so thats the version I use. But I think it has a few security holes... but ahhh screw it... better than paying.

I got my first cell phone around 94, boy was that sucker huge at that point!

Internet I would have to say was around 95-96 and to be honest don't remember much. Only that through the internet I was able to track down a friend that was serving in the Persian Gulf and no one had heard from in awhile. It was great to know that he was safe!

e-mail - well I didn't have email until I worked in the NY Public Library and didn't see the internet until then (wow that was pre-yahoo...crazy) but I do remember in 1991 there was this VAC (?) or VAT or VA..something..computer thing where someone from my college was 'conversing' (how he put it..basically it was IM'ing) with someone at another college near us.

cell phone: i had one that was the size of a brick in 1994 that I got when I started grad school. I found it last year and was like 'wow this is huge'

ETA: holy cow MIRC! I used to chat on the ol' IRC in 1994-1997...the new york chatroom, I forget the actual name but it was newyork something or other.
