How do you know what size monogram to get??

What do you mean? When they offer small or large? Large is for the last name, small is for the first initials.

When I ordered mine, I called up the reception hall to figure out how big the top layer of the cake typically is for ~200 people (My cake is coming from the reception hall, but I haven't picked it yet, so it's just an estimate). He was able to give me a range and then I told the company I was ordering the topper from. They were then able to figure out the best size topper from that. I want to say the big letters were 5' and the small letters 3'... though that'll depend on the size of your cake. Hope that's some help!
