if the engagement ended for ANY reason, would you give the ring back?

I voted Only if he asked for it

I dont really know what I would do. I think it depends on how it ended. If it was a mutal decision and we were on good terms, then i think i would give it back. If it was b/c something horrible was done, then who knows. I could be a spiteful B*tch and not give it back.

But knowing FH, he'd tell me to keep it

it would be hard for me to look at it afterwards, so keeping it would prob be too painful

I agree with Dana, it depends on the circumstances, but unfortunately a ring is considered a 'conditional gift' and therefore legally belongs to the guy. The only way around that is if it was gifted on a birthday, holiday, or other gift-giving occasion and then you can argue that it was a gift, not just an engagement ring. In most circumstances if you dont give it back he can sue.

We spent a lot of time talking about this in family law because the girl basically gets screwed... if the wedding gets called off for whatever reason the guy gets the ring back but traditionally she (and her family) get stuck with the wedding expenses. The same thing with duress and prenups, the guy can threaten to call off the wedding if the girl doesn't sign, knowing he will get the ring and she will be stuck with the costs.

However, this is assuming people are familiar with the law, and that the bride/her family are paying. Also assumes the groom is the one with more $$$$. Both are things that are not necessarily like this anymore.

Edit: if the wedding is called off and the guy tells his ex-fiancee she can keep the ring, then it becomes a gift (not a conditional gift) and it's hers to keep.
