spinoff from BHB - your wedding vs. house

spinoff from BHB - your wedding vs. house

The post on BHB has me thinking - how many of you would have not had your wedding if it meant getting a down payment on a house?
Do any of you regret the wedding and wish you had used the money on something else, like a house?

do i regret the wedding? no, not a chance. i don't think we could've skipped that day for anything. i see where brides can feel this way, but i can't see us in a house right now anyway. with the mortgage and everything else, i don't think the $$ we saved for a wedding would have made it very far as a down payment anyway.

even with all the stuff that went wrong just before my wedding, i'm glad i did it.

i would have spent the rest of my life regretting the decision if i didn't have the wedding. and i would have spent my life thinking that i 'missed out'.

i'm broke, but i'm happy. we'll buy our first house a year later than if we hadn't had the wedding. no big deal.

those are my $.02

i would not have skipped my wedding day for anything. practically i agree - i could have used all that money and did something more constructive than to throw a party - but my wedding day was the happiest day of my life. i wish i could relive it over and over.

worth every penny and not a regret in the world.

Never would I regret having the wedding that I had and spending the $$ that we spent. We're glad we saved up for it, organized it and did it all on our own, and now we're working towards saving $$ for our first house.

I would never trade my wedding day for anything. If I had the option before, I still don't think I would have given up my dream wedding. Sure, we spent alot of money & went way over budget-but in the end we have no regrets. We waited a long time & saved for 2 years.

I would never regret having the wedding we did. What I do regret, however is going way overbudget on certain things. I just feel that my day would have been just as nice & just & special had we not spent as much as we did. I would never want to look back years from now & regret not having the wedding I have always dreamed of. Weddings come once. Buying a house is something that will eventually happen for us.. maybe not now.. but definately in the future. It gives us something to stive for. You may second guess this question now, but if you didnt have a wedding, you would always wonder... I would rather regret something I did, rather than something I didn't do.

I don't regret my wedding at all, either does DH. It was such a wonderful day and I had so much fun!

We weren't given the option but, were given lump sums from our parents with the talk of whatever wasn't spent we could keep as a gift. At first I did think about it but, I am so glad I decided to have the wedding. Yes, it's only one day but, it was a great one.

i used to think that spending all that money on one day wasnt practical, but we went for it and we have no regrets. we were fortunate to have dh's parents give us $10,000 to help pay for the wedding and we paid for the rest on our own and we definitely got back in gifts what we put in. his parents have said before that we should have just used that $ for a down payment on a home, but we are saving just as we did for the wedding and we know it will all work out eventually.

No regrets. And again I have to say that I come from a generation whose parents started in one bedroom apartments with three children. My parents bought their house after 8 years of marriage - a three bedroom split which is now a 5 bedroom split with 3 and a half bathrooms after a major renovation the year before I was born. The neighborhood the house its in is in an area and school district that many find extremely desireable. Id say to them it was worth waiting 8 years for. They had memories of a glorious wedding AND over 40 years of a houseful of children.

The truth is, as lush as my wedding may have been, its cost would not even have come close to a down payment on a home in an area we would like to live in.

I would never trade my wedding day in for anything! I always say 'you almost always regret the things you never did, not the things you did do.'

With that said, my DH and I went into the wedding knowing that whatever we spent on the wedding, we would still have the money left over for a down payment. This was important to us.

Lauren, I don't think you answered your own question??

I am not sure I understand your question correctly but if this is between getting married and a house, I would pick getting married. I would never purchase a house without a partner being my spouse.

Now, if you mean spending major $$$ that could be used toward a down payment, no, I would never spend that much.

DH already had a house so our situation was different. Regarless, we had a smaller budget for our wedding.

While we had a smaller budget, we did not want to cheat ourselves out of a wedding we both wanted. We did not have a huge wedding but we had what we wanted and what we could afford and we had a great wedding we loved without going in debts.

No regrets - would have my wedding over and over and over again. Best day of my life - wouldn't trade it in for anything!!!

A house will come in time - we are not ready for one...just don't want one yet. We live in NYC and are still enjoying apt & city life! Besides we got back almost all we spent on the wedding in gift $. We did very well.

i'd pick a wedding over a house anyday...but that's b/c we (shockingly) do not want a house right now....

I don't feel like we had to make that decision b/c we had a limited budget...I may have gone for the house!
