spinoff from BHB - your wedding vs. house

Original post by LaurenluvsTJ

The post on BHB has me thinking - how many of you would have not had your wedding if it meant getting a down payment on a house?
Do any of you regret the wedding and wish you had used the money on something else, like a house?

You cant relive a wedding. You can always save for a house. JMO

i would not have skipped my wedding day for anything. practically i agree - i could have used all that money and did something more constructive than to throw a party - but my wedding day was the happiest day of my life. i wish i could relive it over and over.

worth every penny and not a regret in the world.

100% agree with this!

Plus, the cost of our wedding would not be enough for a down payment on a house on LI. We would need double to make a dent in the mortgage payments.

I agree! I had the wedding of my dreams, the memories from that day are priceless! We are very happy with our living situation when the timing is right we'll start house hunting.

well...i wanted to 'elope' and have a small intimate affair...so i think possibly had i been able to take the same $$$ and use it towards a house, i would've. especially now with our complete asshat basement tenant being a bigger asshat than humanly thought possible, i'd give about anything to afford a downpayment these days. sigh.

Nope! My parents paid for my entire wedding, and it was very expensive - every single vendor - But, my parents could have very easily hgave us all that $ for a downpayment on a house. . . But to me, a house isn't that damn important! Its just one headache after another!

Me & DH live in the house right next door from DH's parents. They own this house too, b/c it used to be DH's grandparents house. We pay rent, [when they want it, which they NEVER take it from us] and when stupid things like a flood happens, or a pipe almost bursting b.c of our heating system, we call THE LANDLORDS, and don't have to worry about spending any money on damage cause we don't own the house! Me & Dh have it made, basiucally, although 1 day in the furtute we would like to have our own house, but to me, at the present time, me still going to school and trying to furhter my education as much as possible, even if I'm bringing home less $, to me, thats more worth it. To me, my DH working onkly 1 job and me getting to spend more time with him, is more worth it, then him working 2 jobs, and me never seeing him. Having my name on the mortgage is just extra headaches we don't need! And PLUS, allthese people who own houses, alit of them can't go on vacations for a long time! NOT Us, we want to travel and reslly see all the islands before buying a house and having kids! And I love the house I live in, so Im very content in my living style and dont want any changes, nor do me and Dh need any changes!

The expnesive wedding was WELL WORTH IT! [thanks mom & dad] ;)

Do I regret having my wedding?? NO!!!

DH & I were fortunate enough to purchase our home 7 months prior to the wedding. We set a longer engagement (2 years) so that we could save for the wedding (we paid for it entirely ourselves) but yet still have time to save money for a house. We did not splurge on our wedding & really priortized (sp) what we wanted & what we didn't need. I can honestly say that we didn't spend too much on our wedding as both of us felt it was a necessity to have the wedding but not worth spending 35-50K on something that lasted 5 hours JMHO. Looking back now almost 9 months after the wedding, I would not have done a thing differently! It was still the wedding I dreamed of & at the end of the day, I was still married to my DH & could go home to my own house that we saved & purchased.

If you truly want to have a house & the wedding, there are definately sacrafices that need to be made.

Wedding anyday--- over a house.... Theres always time to plan for the future and save what comes in together as a couple.... Our wedding was the best day of both our lives and wouldnt have changed a thing -- and now together we'll save for a house that'll meet our needs as husband and wife :)

i love how the majority of the girls said a wedding rather than a house . . . !

even though my parents paid for everything w/ my wedding, me and Dh could have probably swung a house, but we also chose an over $13,000 HM, which was still part of the whole wedding thing, but even thought the wedding day is the whole day and the Hm is a week or more, it doesnt matter, it comes and goes, but those memories are forever. My parents spent alot of $ on our wedding, and they don't regret a thing, either. They laugh when they watch the wedding video and name the price of the entire wedding, and they were happy to do it for their only daughter.

Plus, u know what? Dh desperately wants to move out of state . . . so we dont even know WHERE/What state we want to live in, but he really wants to get out of NY! No rush! We want to travel and do so many things be4 buying a house and having a kid!

Lauren, I don't think you answered your own question??

Haha, no I didn't!

I would never trade the wedding for ANYTHING! It was the best day of my life! DH and I are looking for a house now and my parents told me if they hadn't helped paid for the wedding, they would have helped with a down payment, and you know what, I have absolutely no regrets. When my mom told me that, I didn't wish that I had done that instead of the wedding.
We will have a house, we will start small. We have lived in apartment since getting married and it has been fine.
We will always have our wedding day to look back on, and those memorie will live with us forever. A house can come later, but you can't decide in a couple of years to have the big wedding. I know I would have regretted it if we had chosen the house over the wedding.

It's a toss up for me. Both are important life changing moments for a couple. I wouldn't have changed a thing. I'd still do the small wedding at the low cost than have a house right away.

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I absolutely would have given up the reception for a house. The ceremony and all that made that special - no, I wouldn't give that up, but the party after - absolutely.

thanks for posting this - i definitely needed to hear all of these responses. . .

sometimes i freak out about the $$ since FH and I are paying for the wedding ourselves with minimal help and we will start saving for a house AFTER the wedding. . .

but its really nice to know that most brides believe that it is all worth it in the end!
