Spinoff from Rich Girls post: Do you find today's teenage generation extremely RUDE?
Original post by MrsTC
I do.
I feel as if most of them have no manners or respect and are into things I didn't even know about at that age. I don't think they appreciate what is given to them.
What is the difference - what prompted this? I think a few factors are:
-the internet -cable TV almost everywhere -hardcore rap music (NOT all rap)
what do youy think?

I can't wait til all of you are parents!!! I think the parents of teenagers today have a much more difficult job raising them than our parents did (and I am a baby boomer parent BTW). Yes I wanted to give my kids everything. Most parents want to. But here are some major differences I see.
1. More 2 working parent households. It is so expensive to live on LI and NYC that it often takes 2 incomes to afford mortgages and bills. More children are in daycare or with babysitters or home alone. They are losing the tight reins that our parents were able to put on us.
2. More single parent homes due to divorce or non married parents. Again kids without parental supervision left to their own devices.
3. Tighter reins on parents in general. All of the supposed experts who espoused giving kids time outs and more gentle parenting. A good old fashioned spanking worked wonders with us! Our parents didn't have to worry that someone would call Child Protective Services on them either.
4. More parents concerned about themselves and less about their kids. While Mom is at the gym and dad is playing golf, where are their kids? Do they even know?
I do think that teenagers today are absolutely more rude than we were. But I also think that most parents try. My children were brought up to respect other people and they do. Neither of them would even consider being anything but considerate to others. It's just not in their makeup.
4.

Do you think every 'older' generation says this about teenagers? I mean, what about the 60s when the Beatles came out-- the way we are talking about rap, didn't parents back then disapprove of rock and roll in the same way?

I dont think music has anything to do with it. Parents read a book now to learn how to raise their kids. PArents do have tighter reins on them.
But I think that parents make it easier for kids because of guilt. ' Perfect example, I was at the park the other night with my friends kid and he wanted to go down the slide the older boys about 5yrs old wouldnt get off the slide. So I asked them nicely to get off the slide and let the other lids use it. So they proceeded to ignore me. Then the father got up and started rationalizing iwth his son about how should get off ( mind you not in a stern voice, but a mercy voice)
Well they paid no mind to their father either. And the father was pathetic, he was sitting there rationalizing with the kids.
So I stood up went over again knocked on the slide and told them to be fair and get off, or I was going to sit on the slide and not let them down. Well they got off. ' 'Father gave me a dirty look, but oh well
WE are getting older but kids are spoiled and are taught they dont have to listen to anyone, because its abuse, or what ever other sick crap people do..
