I don't mind it at all. As long as the mother is discreet about it than I am okay with it.

I'm torn on this. I understand Misty's point, but at the same time I think people are too intolerant and uptight about this. I have had girlfriends that have had to leave the store/restaurant - etc. because they are made to feel uncomfortable about breast feeding in a public place and YES, the child needed to be fed IMMEDIATELY - it happens. I mean, if there's a bathroom nearby use it but if not, what are you going to do??
(in one instance, my girlfriend ran to her car with a screaming infant and a 3 year old instead of staying where she was because people made her feel this way. I think that's terrible!)
And not for nothing, but the guy is dead! He doesn't care who's doing what around him anymore (j/k)!

it should be discreetful.. i know my mother said she use to have a blanket, and would have it covered and people just thought she was holding her baby

I'd like to see the person that thinks its wrong to do in public, to take that hungry baby from the mom at the restaurant, and handle it themselves. Good Luck
I definately dont feel that a woman should have to hide in a bathroom or another room just to feed her child. Its a natural part of life.
I agree that it should be done with some tact. But the mother is feeding her child. Its a natural thing. I think this country is way too uptight and awkward with nudity. Life is too short.

I have NO problem with it and do not feel that discretion needs to be policed. The woman's breast is utilitarian - it is designed to feed a baby but since it has been so OVERLY sexualized in society, people forget that little fact.
Personally, I find it disgusting that anyone would find BREASTFEEDING in public - or wherever - disgusting. But that's just me.

YES, it is absolutely OKAY for a Mom to BF in public.

I just want to add that it is my personal opinion that people who are 'put off' by a BFing Mommy are the ones that are uptight about the human body and nudity. BFing is not a sexual thing. American culture is very, very hung up on the 'sexual' aspect of human bodies, while many other places around the world are much more natural at accepting BFing as the beautiful, nurturing act that it is.

I agree but I dont agree. If there is an option to go somewhere more private than yes I would expect the mother to go there instead. Although it is a very natural thing that is beautiful, I dont think it needs to be shared with strangers. I have seen moms bf in friendlys where other children are around and it causes them to just stare and maybe ask questions that arent ready to be asked yet or to be seen.
There is a way to be tactful in everything we choose to do or have to do...if it is not done on a respectful way then no I do not think its ok at all. I have to admit, I would not feel comfortable sitting somewhere with my 16 year old brother where a mom is openly breastfeeding...just doesnt seem right. JMO
Also, even though I think like this I do not find myself being one of those 'uptight' people about their bodies or anyone else's.

I think it's really rude to relegate a mother who needs to BF her child, to a filthy, stinky bathroom. Who eats in a bathroom?!?!

I didnt necessarily mean a bathroom at a public restaurant but say for example if you are a bbq as some have said...i think you can make the choice to go into the house into another roomor some place else to breastfeed. If it is in public, as I said..there are tactful ways of doing this. Yes its natural, yes its beautiful, but I do not need to see it as I am eating. You always have other choices and if you dont at the time, there is a way to cover up....always depends on the situation.

honestly, i have felt very uncomfortable in the past when i have seen a woman's entire bare breast while breast feeding in the middle of the food court at the mall.
guess i'm uptight.

Re: Spinoff from Theresa's Post, Do you think its ok for women to breast feed in public.
I agree that a bathroom is the LAST place a BFing Mom should be 'shunned' to!
spel/nyc...perhaps I should clarify my 'uptight' comment. I did not mean it as such a negative thing (the way you are interpreting). What I mean to say is, as a society, Americans are very pre-disposed to negative feedback when it comes to social nudity. We catch a glimpse of a woman's breast and the reaction is, 'OMG - her boob is sticking out!' This is how we are taught to react by our society. Compare that to someplace in Europe, and people look and just keep on walking - they don't even bat an eye lash.
Again, it's just my piddly opinion...but, I just believe it has everything to do w/societal and cultural differences in what we are taught to accept. I was not trying to offend anyone for their opposing opinion.

Everyone's opinions are always welcomed by myself. Thats what is cause for the start of wonderful debates in my opinion. So therefore, Claud and everyone else's comments I take with an open mind and heart.

Im fine with bf in public too, but discreetly is nice.
I dont think the mom should have to run and hide.
We are a pretty tightass country. In Italy my cousins bf their kids right at the table with a towel over her and the men dont mind, its just a mom feeding her child

Re: Spinoff from Theresa's Post, Do you think its ok for women to breast feed in public.
No way did my saying 'put off' mean that I am ashamed of the human body or uncomfortable with nudity. And I NEVER said I took it as a 'sexual thing'. It is far from it! What put me, and plenty of other people off was that she was doing it at a funeral, and then trying to make a statement at the same time. Same goes for the incident at the engagement party while we were sitting around having conversation and drinking.
I do not by any means think that a woman should be 'shunned' to a bathroom. What I mean by discretion is put a cloth diaper over yourself or be a BIT discrete about it. Don't just open your shirt and bra and sit there with your boob hanging out at a funeral until you go take your baby out of someone else's arms.
JMHO.

Re: Spinoff from Theresa's Post, Do you think its ok for women to breast feed in public.
Well Misty, when you give that much detail...it does sound like the woman you are talking about was TRYING to make a spectacle of herself. In that case, I would agree w/you that discretion is the name of the game - especially b/c it was at a funeral. Funeral homes have lounges (that are not bathrooms and she could have used better judgement).
But, the engagement party thing....I don't know if I'd be so bent about that, especially since it was at someone's home, not out at a restaurant...unless it was the SAME woman
I do understand where you are coming from....but, I still think the way we (as a society) view the topic is a little uptight (for lack of a better word).
