SPINOFF: How do you split the holidays?

Re: SPINOFF: How do you split the holidays?

Well, Thanksgiving we have dinner with my family and dessert with his because his mom can't cook
My family does a huge Xmas Eve, so we spend that with my fam.
His family does a huge Xmas Day, so we spend that with his fam.
All the other holidays, like Easter, we just go where ever. Everyone really cares mostly about Thanksgiving and Xmas in our families.

This is always a problem for us.

However, between last year, this year and next, most of my family will have moved (Florida, Arizona, Colorado)...so I don't think holidays will really be an issue anymore! My inlaws WIN!!

My family is in NY and we live in Chicago. I love Thanksgiving, so I go home every year. His mom is not the greatest cook, so I would be completely disappointed. DH doesn't usually go with me bc he's in law school and starts studying for finals.

I usually go home to NY a few days before xmas and then come back to Chi xmas day to eat with in-laws. They don't open presents until after dinner which really ticks me off. So, I open presents in the morning with my family and then after dinner with his.

We're lucky...our families only live 5 blocks from each other so it is easy for us to split they days between the 2 houses.

We're lucky in that FH's family is Jewish, mine is Catholic. So, the only holidays we're talking about is Thanksgiving and Mother's Day. Mother's Day is easy, we just go with our own mothers (this will be complicated once we have kids I guess but we have a WHILE before that!). Thanksgiving, we've done our own thing. But, my family holidays are always way more fun than his (much larger family) and since it's really just his mom that he's worried about, she'll probably come with him to whereever my family is having Thanksgiving that year.

we don't split them...we have them all at my house to avoid any arguements

thats what i'm planning on doing this year now that we have the house. But in any previous years it has been a nightmare. Since my parents live fairly close - and his parents do not (mom in NC and dad in the Hamptons) sometimes - i guess we do see my family more often but then i think my DH wants to compensate for this by seeing his family for ALL holidays. It's a nightmare. And then my mom gets offended and of course we compromise but ugh..........

anthonys parents live in florida so we usually dont get to spend the holidays with them so we are always able to spend them with my family.

Christmas eve is always at my house, no way I'm giving up my mothers 12 course meal (gotta love Italian Mommy's)
Christmas day we spend at his parents. Thanksgiving, mothers day and fathers day is at my house where I invite both families so no one is left out. Palm Sunday is at my moms and Easter is at my in-laws. New years eve is at my sister in laws and new years day is at my aunts

Re: SPINOFF: How do you split the holidays?

please don't make me think about splitting the holidays this early in the year......

it's ALWAYS a struggle...especially when my brother is overseas...because it depresses my parents not to have all of their children around them for the holidays...and my sister lives in CA now, my brother works constantly...so I get the brunt of the pressure!

We usually split the day in half....the afternoon with DH's family and the evening with my family.
It helps that his family is Italina and eats early, and my family is crazy and eats later!

i'm fortunate that boosh has a very small family and she kinds tolerates her extended family. We get along wonderfully with my in-laws, but her aunts and uncles are older and we don't see eye to eye on a lot of things.

So, alot of the holidays are spent with my family.

Thanksgiving and Easter and Christmas Eve are always spent with mine.

Christmas Day is with her family because the day is hosted at her parent's house, so it's easier to deal with.

It always turns out to be a major issue!

We try to go to his family early in the day and then get to my family later, but by the time we get out of my MIL's house, everything is already wrapped up at my house!

It stinks and I can't imagine what it will be like when we have kids!

we try to split it, part of the time at one family part at the other.... like for thanksgiving you might eat dinner at one house, then go to the other house for dessert

Re: SPINOFF: How do you split the holidays?

This is easy.
I grew up military so I’m used to spending time away from my parents for holidays. Other than Christmas and Chinese New Years, Jim’s family doesn’t celebrate them either. I also wont fly into or out of snowy or cold weather.

So, Major holidays:
Chinese New Years (Jim’s family)
Labor Day (Jim & I usually do Hershey Park) sometimes we visit my family at this time instead
Thanksgiving (see my note on how I feel about this one, we do nothing or I cook for Jim’s family)
Christmas (Jim’s family)

All other holidays, no family of either side, just Jim & I alone, New Years, Valentine’s, St. Patricks Day (Jim’s Bday), Mothers/Fathers Day, Fourth of July, Halloween (we do nothing).

I visit my family in April or May and maybe again for Labor Day (or I did until the wedding stuff started)
Those visits are our ‘holidays’ we give our bday presents to the kids and/or Christmas presents.

I know it sounds weird but it’s REALLY not that big of a deal to my family that we’re not around eachother for the holidays. As long as we call and chat, no biggie. Even when we all lived in the same town we rarely spent holidays together when my brother & I moved out. I’d go to friends houses and he’d just go ‘out’. *Shrug*

We've been doing the same thing. Since I cook this huge vegetarian feast with my mom, we have been spending dinenr at my house and going to his family's house for dessert, but that's not good enough for his family and then his aunt ends up leaving because she doens't feel like waiting for us. So it's like, what's the point?

Re: SPINOFF: How do you split the holidays?

We do 'double duty' holidays, which basically entails always eating two dinners, driving a lot and being very tired. Rob's family always eats early, mine late, so we eat a lot. Of course you cannot say 'oh we're not hungry' because then someone is bound to be offened. So we just eat and suffer the consequences.
