and if a parent is no religion, how do they raise their children to pick a religion? at a young age a child most likely doesnt think about the religion so seriously... is the parent going to show videos on each religon and ask if they like any of them better than no religion, or are they going to raise them no religion???

this question? I think it is pretty clear that I am not going to raise my children a religion...

and I mentioned my sister b/c you said
Your asking me, but what would you do if your child said mommy I want to go to church. Sounds like you would'nt let him.
I respect my family members choices...and I was defending myself from the accusation that I would not be open minded

why are agnostics and athesits being called out to meet some higher standard b/c they don't agree with the idology of the majority?

Totally agree with this.
Im not sure I am agnostic but Im labeled such often enough (why must we have labels?)

Re: Spinoff of afterlife post.....how faithful are you?

I can't beleive what i am reading, a question was asked regarding if you were faithful, and people that don't believe in god are told they are wrong.

Religion is filloed with hyprocriceis, and I am supposed to be hypocritical also, by baptising my child even though I am not religious, so they can get marreid in a church.

I ahve to go get against everything I beleive in, for a church wedding.

Can't you get baptized at any age, if that s the individual's choice.

I don't think it is right to force religion on my child by baptizing them, if they want to choose a religion, they can pursue it when they are old enough to do so, and I don't think that makes me a bad parent, I actually think that makes me a better one. I respect the fact that my children can make up their own mind about these things, and i don't have to bully them into be and Atheist.

I agree, baptism IMO is a serious commitment, one that i think should be made as an adult. I know that it's done to 'cleanse the baby from original sin' and maybe I'm wrong about that but I've been to about 30 christenings and remember hearing that phrase alot- but I find that whole idea totally offensive.
DH and I will not be raising our children any religion, however, if they have questions or want to attend religious services I will of course accompany them and have them speak to different people of different religions so that they can make an educated choice on their own. I wish that's what my parents did, maybe I wouldn't be so against organized religion today.

Not to be antagonistic, but I can't find any where in this thread where anyone said that those who don't believe in God are bad people.
Maybe I didn't read it carefully enough...But I just can't find it.

Agreed Shel...
I get religion forced down my throat from my father and my uncle (his brother). They know how I feel and yet they continue to lecture me. I'm 30 years old-I think I can decide for myself, thank you very much.
Do you know I have a 12 year old cousin who is an atheist and some of her classmates taunt her and tell her she's going to hell?
It's bizarre to me. Everyone has their own opinion. No one is right and no one is wrong. But when other force their personal beliefs upon me, I draw the line.

I knew a girl who was Jehovah Witness and she did this all the time.

Bella Bella's post about how people should baptize.

She just said she thought it was wrong not to baptize a child...She didn't say she thought people who didn't were bad.
That's her opinion, no?

Maybe I am not a bad person, but her opinion is that I am wrong.

I would never say I think you are wrong for being religious, even though I think it is wrong.

If I was to post that soand so is wrong for goign to church, would people not have a problem with that?

There is no wrong and right in opininos, but she decided to say people that will not baptize your children are wrong!!!! And I take offense to that

I guess I see what you are saying.

Re: Spinoff of afterlife post.....how faithful are you?

I am Roman Catholic. I have a tremendous amount of faith in God, JC and the teachings of the Bible. That is not to say that I agree with every single thing. It seems clear to me from actually reading the Bible that it was edited in a certain way to protect social norms of the time.

I do have faith in my religion and I do believe that my religion is right. That is the entire basis of my faith. If I thought that Judiasm or Buddism was right, then I would not truly have faith.

I also believe in heaven and that it will be filled with people who, despite their religious beliefs still followed certain rules, so to speak, that you find across the board in all religions - respect for yourself and others, kindness, forgiveness, etc. I think that people who are good at heart go to heaven and if you are an evil RC, you wont be there.

I would never ask someone to justify their beliefs and am a little suprised to see so many people ask that those with faith explain why they are 'forcing' baptism or religion on a child.

To me, my religion is a GIFT that I can give to my children. Should they question it when they mature? Absolutely. You don't have faith because someone tells you to. It is ultimately a personal decision. I did take my own time in college (out of the watchful eyes of my parents) and did question the RC church.

I try not to judge people on their religious beliefs as I consider this to be a deeply personal choice. This post is not meant to judge anyone and I would hope that nothing in my post will be quoted to ask me to justify any of my beliefs as I have not asked anyone to justify theirs.

ok... i told fh about this discussion..

he thought this..
' if the parents dont believe in any religion, most likely the kids would continue as what the parents are,

what kid is going to say :

'ok i dont have to go to church or temple now, but i want to start doing that, and take away time from playing with my toys and watching tv...'...

most kids would rather continue to play video games and watch tv, over going to church..

Interesting point.
TV & Games are more popular than God??
(if only John Lennon were still alive)

I guess, but I remember as a kid being asked to go to church by my friends. You know like sleep overs. 'On sunday we go to church and then we're off for ice cream'.

That still happens right?
