ok... i told fh about this discussion..
he thought this.. ' if the parents dont believe in any religion, most likely the kids would continue as what the parents are,
what kid is going to say :
'ok i dont have to go to church or temple now, but i want to start doing that, and take away time from playing with my toys and watching tv...'...
most kids would rather continue to play video games and watch tv, over going to church..
I think it can go either way. My grandmother was very religious as are 2 of my uncles. My mother, not so much. One of her other brothers is not relgious at all yet his daughter is extremely relgious - but not Roman Catholic like her father.
It all comes down to the person when they are an adult. I agree most people will raise their children they way they were raised, ie I was raised Roman Catholic and went to catholic school for 12 years. It doesn't mean I am not aware of other religions and I am of course free to learn about all of them if I choose.

I asked to go to religion class when I was in 4th grade, since all my firends went. I realized I wasn't into it, and didn't go after that until I had to make my confirmation.

Ah, but why did you HAVE to make your confirmation?

I didn't get married in a church and wouldn't have even thought of it. For myself, that would be extremely hypocritical. Because I opted to get married at the farm, my father grew extra-spiteful and didn't acknowledge our marriage as a real marriage.

Just had to add...just like Shel-I HAD to go to be baptised, go to sunday school, get confirmed... I had absolutely no say in the matter-which is why I'm not going to force religion on my own children.

Which friends? The ones with the guns and the knives?? THey went to church??
Actually the FCA (fellowship of Christian Athletes) which I was involved in and the other School friends. I stayed away from home as much as possible when we lived there. Which I should mention was from my 8th grade through Graduation and not my whole life.

I am Catholic and I believe in God. I also believe in Heaven and that all my loved ones are living happily ever after there.
Re: Spinoff of afterlife post.....how faithful are you?
Becky...i'm not sure who your comment was directed at...but I didn't mean to question anyones faith...I am pretty careful not to do that...b/c I get bombarded all the time (do one to others...right ) but I did question Bellabella...b/c she said whats the big deal about baptising your child...'its just a little holy water'...I just turned the question around...and asked would Christians allow their infants to partake in another religions ceremonies...just in case...they might be interested in it...
peewee: I was not married in a Church and never even thought about that option...ever...there are many phrases in a church ceremony that I would not say...its not part of my beliefs...so why should I? and I will not go to a Church and have 'a little holy water' sprinkled on my child...b/c they will ask if I will raise that child Christian...and I will not agree to that...I am VERY knowledgable on many mahy religions (as per my profession) so I have no probelm answering any and all questions for my children on any religion...
I just ask people to remember...if you wouldn't tell a Jew or Hindu or Buddhist, etc that they were wrong...please extend the same courtesy to atheists...I have my own set of beliefs...values...morals...and I think we can all agree that no two people share the same exact thoughts...Its demeaning...and just discriminating...

I was just asking if there were any people who were atheists that were married in a church (maybe there husband wanted to or whatever) I was not in anyway being unkind to anyoned beliefs so bark up another tree if you want an argument I was asking a general question!

Erica, I wasn't directing it any one person at all. I read everyone's posts and it was sort of a general response to the statements and questions, including the original 'How faithful are you' question. By the time I got through the four pages of posts, I didn't even remember who said what.

This is interesting. About a month ago my mother actually apologized to me for not providing a religious backdrop for my childhood. I THANKED her for giving me the freedom to choose. FH and I are agnostic. Our child will be raised to respect and appreciate the differences in people and the fact that we live in a country that is founded on such a belief.

Re: Spinoff of afterlife post.....how faithful are you?
Just for a bit of perspective, I was never baptized. My father is Jewish from a very religious family and my Mother was brought up Roman Catholic.
Although my Mother converted on paper for my Dad's family to accept her, she never converted in her mind/soul/heart.
They decided not to baptize us and take away the choice we had before us to decide for ourselves....
NO ONE can tell me they were wrong....they did what they felt was best for us and I am greatful to them for caring so much to not just say 'Oh, it's just a little holy water'.... That, in my mind, would have been far worse....

Interesting perspective. I totally agree with what I quoted.

I did not get married in a church, ceremony was done by a judge. DH, raised catholic, feels the same as me so it wasn't an issue, though I think it might have been with his family. But we paid for it so nobody could really give their opinion on it.
