Spinoff of Income Question.....Will you be living in the 'style to which you are accustomed?'

OK, my MOH is my best friend, and I am close with her family. Her dad sat us down a while ago and said to us, I really hope you meet men who can support you in the style to which you girls are accustomed! (a little sexist, whatever...)

So, my question is, will you be living in the style to which you are accustomed? I know I won't, and sometimes I get a little sad. My mom said I might not be able to afford to get my hair highlighted every month anymore with mortgage payments and everything!! I hadn't thought until lately what I will be giving up to afford our place and pay for all the wedding stuff (I started cutting out minor things--lunches out at work, etc., and now it is time for more $ stuff) So sad...And all to live in a one bedroom condo...

I'm going through the same panic stage, although I don't think I live an extravagant life. So I have to cut out the spontaneous shopping so we can eat....no biggie. DH will have to give up his Football Pkg on Direct TV this year, I think. For us, it's worth it to be on our own (but we're not in NY).

I will say that my cousin married someone that can't support her lifestyle (she grew up the daughter of a dr, they had an inground pool, pool table, and new cars when they got their licenses). Now she's living in the apt. her parents built for her grandparents when they were alive rent free because her and her husband a 2 daughters and dog can't afford to live in their own house.

I know, I never felt extravagent and now I have to cut down even more! Which is not to say we are going to be living in a box, but you know...I guess I was lucky growing up because I didn't really have to worry about money...Is everything cheaper in GA? Or just housing?

Yup, I'm living in the lifestyle to which I have become accustomed, but it's not in the way you think! I grew up having very little money and we had a really great year last year, but this year has been horrible. So while it sucks, I'm used to it at least, although it's definitely a shock coming off of last year's large amounts of disposable income.

EVERYTHING! car insurance, food, gas, utilities and income is relative...so I'm making not s much as I did in NY, but my job isn't as important as it was. If I was doing EXACTLY what I was doing...I'd be making about the same. IE: as a daycare teacher I could have made $27,000/yr.

no. I took a big hit going back to school & getting married. As I have said in previous posts, I was a bartender...and I used to make a fortune working p/t. I was used to sleeping all day, living in the nail & hair salons, tanning everyday, driving expensive sports cars & exotic trucks.....shopping until my closets burst.

Those days are soooooooooo over. I mean, we do OK..DH makes a good living & we are not starving or anything. We have some debts to catch up on & now with my student loan kicking in & me with out a job (yet ) we put alot of $$ into savings - just in case.

I also have been out of my mom's house for many many years, and my lifestyle was what I provided for myself.....I go nothing from my mom growing up....if I wanted something, I had to buy it myself - no matter what it was.

For the past 5 or 6 years I have been helping my mother support my younger brother and have always paid for everything myself - never any help from the parents. So I think my lifestyle wil stay the same. I never get mani/pedi and I don't dye my hair anyway

No way. It's just too hard these days. I've already started to make some 'cuts' as to what I can spend. But you know, I look around at some people I know who have SO much money and can do whatever they want, and many of them are unhappy, a few are divorced, etc. I am so thankful to have an amazing family, a fabulous husband, lots of love, and health. And I believe in time, more money will come!

Well, FH and I have been living together for 3 years, so I've gotten somewhat used to not spending money the way I did when I lived at home. I was never spoiled by my parents, in fact not to be rude, but my parents can be a little cheap at times, but I did have everything they deemed I 'needed.' The best part of all was we went on week long vacations at least twice a year and they paid for everything.
I have no problem driving a car until it doesn't run anymore, I have no problem buying less clothes, it's the lack of vacations that really bugs me. I love to travel and FH and I just don't have the money to go away as much as I would like. We usually go away once a year and maybe a weekend away too. I know I sound like a brat, but that's not enough! I love going away and seeing new places. In fact, I'm perfectly happy seeing old places, just take me away!

I don't get any $ from my parents now, and am paying for the wedding myself, I just meant I will have to cut down to pay our mortgage and everything...And I am starting a doctoral program so a huge chunk of my salary will go to that for a few years.

I am living a different lifestyle that I grew up with. I grew up in a working class family. We never owned a home or a car and never went on a family vacation, etc. My parents did everything for their kids but financially we didn't have tons. I earn a really good salary now and DH does even better so together we are very financial secure. We owna home, 2 cars, travel at least once a year, etc. It is very different...DH leds a similar life to the way he grew up so he doesn't understand my amazement at it all but he admires a lot that I do. But what I do know is I will not raise spoiled children...I want them to learn the value of a dollar and be independent and strive to be their best similar to the way I feel I was raised and to never expect.

In some ways it is the same and others different. My priorities have definitely changed. I'm now shopping for things we can both use and things for the house rather than for my own selfish shopping sprees.

We only eat out once in a while but we still spoil eachother for birthdays/christmas and go on vacation at least once a year.

No, I will not enjoy the lifestyle to which I have become accostomed. And, amazingly, this question was posed to me too.

I grew up relatively priviledged. My parents did well and have always been very generous with my brother and I.

Life has changed since my FI and I started preparing for our future. It will change even more when we finally buy a house and take on a mortgage.

I wouldn't change a thing! I am happier now than I have ever been and cannot wait to get married. This is the most exciting adventure I've ever been on and I truly feel that I am the luckiest girl in the world. I'd live on a perk bench with him.

(Sappy, but true!)

NOTHING could be worse than the way JT and I lived when we were in Boston. We didn't eat some days because we had NO money. We would pay the rent and the bills and then nothing would be left. We must have eaten dry pasta for weeks until I got a job there. Even when I had a good job making a lot of money, rent was so high and we would only be able to spend 40 bucks a week on food for the two of us And STILL I didn't lose weight!
So, I think once we get married, we will be living fine. We're both advancing in our careers, so as time goes on, things will get better. I think it's part of life, you ahve to start somewhere.

I'd have to say no. Growing up, my family was well off and always had the best of everything.
I am lucky enough to own a house and drive a decent car, but the house needs lots of work and it's a struggle.
I have made a sacrifice when it comes to working and being home for my family. I only work part time so I am able to be around for my son and future baby. My parents both worked full time. To me, it's a sacrifice worth making.

well no not for a while. After we get married we are going to save every penny! We want to buy a house within 6-10 month (hopefully). So we are buckling down! And i am sure we aren't going to be living the vida loca after buying the house because i am sure we will be getting the fixer upper! So a fixing we shall be
