do you think that our parents should be expected to cover wedding costs? in this day and age, i think that the bride and groom should expect to shoulder most of the costs involved.
our parents offered to cover expenses and we excepted b/c we needed help, but we are still paying over 90% of the costs, which we expected to do.
what are your feelings on this?

Re: spinoff, of sorts, tradition...
let's take a look back and see where these 'traditions' come from
a daughter went from her father's house to her hubands house like a chatel. the father paid a dowry to marry the child off. there was no dating, no working, no means to take care of oneself if you were a girl.
today, we all have jobs and the ability (if not the desire) to take care of ourselves. Many things have changed since these 'traditions' were handed down.
women are more independent, but with that independence comes responsibility. If I want to walk through the world and be a responsible adult, I can turn around once I get a ring on my finger and say 'hey parents, it's tradition for you to blow this much money on my wedding' and have that be an EXPECTATION...
I can't believe in this day, when we know the cost of living and that Medicare is going down the tubes, that anyone would put that kind of a burden on their parents, or the parents of their fh.
it they can swing a bill like that, wonderful, but anything else is just too much.

eta: there is no right or wrong in terms of who pays, but when it comes to the point where the family is burdened by it, or is struggling to meet the demand, I don't feel that is right. I think it's wrong do that to people that have cared and struggled for us all of our lives.

Basically it should fall on the bride and groom, and anything that anyone else contributes should be considered gravy.
The only thing I expect from my parents and his parents are for them to show up. I am thankful for anything else. We decided to get married and have a wedding, and therefore we are responsible for it.

I feel that if the parents want to invite a lot of their friends and family, then yes, they should feel like they WANT to contribute.
If our parents didn't want to contribute, that would have been fine.
But we would have had about 200 people less and probably six months earlier.
Overall, I really think all of this is up to individual families and their own desires and levels of comfort!

Re: spinoff, of sorts, tradition...
Sorry for the second post but I really have to say that we are all a bunch of different ladies from different backgrounds. And I really stand by what I feel - to each their own... For some, you have been living on your own for many years and feel comfortable footing the whole bill. For others, they may literally be leaving their parent's house for their husband's (and their own) house.
I am the latter. I went to school, came home and have never left. I own a home with my FH and will move in the day after the wedding. I am not embarassed and I don't think that I am an old-school girl at all.
My parents aren't paying for my whole wedding, but they are doing a LOT - esp. when it comes to me. And I am totally grateful.

NO. I think that back in the day - people got married younger - right out of highschool, they needed help. Nowadays - 'most' couples marry later-after they are out of college - have a job - live on their own. Anyone in this situation should not 'expect' anything but love, support and encouragement for the wedding. JMO
