Spinoff on the bracelet 'game' post

As I was reading the article I could not help thinking that if we were more open about sex and sexuality in our country such 'games' might not exist. I have no idea if my thought is correct, but I do sometimes think that if we were more open it would take some of the curiousity out of it. I just wanted to see others opinions on this matter.

I dunno, but there is less censorship for sex and nudity in other counties who do not seem to have these problems. I don't know if it's related, or if it is just a different culture.

I don't have an answer for this either really, but I am a high school teacher and I feel that sex is pervasive in the culture these kids are growing up in. All the music, the movies, MTV, etc glorify it to the point that sex is just 'something to do' like going to the movies or out for pizza. I was disgusted to see some odd 'commercial' on MTV the other night that depicted a teenage girl giving the definition of 'tea bagging.' That's pretty open.

Sex sells. Madison Ave and Hollywood know that and count on it. I beleive that a great lot of people in this country see sex as a dirty little secret instead of the joyful thing it can and should be. Because of that -- children (and adults too!) want to play with what they aren't supposed to.

That being given -- I think it's the responsibility of parents to teach their children about about sex and what it means. A lot of parents never do that. I know my mother didn't ever have the 'talk' with me. When I was 11 or ever! What I knew - I learned from my friends at school... and it's probably why I gave 'it' up when I was 15.

As a parent it is my job to teach my daughter that while there is nothing 'wrong' with sex or acknowledging her own sexuality... she must be aware of the rules and the responsibilities that it entails. And as parents we have to be aware of what's on the tube or in the DVD player, and explain WHY we don't want them to watch or listen... instead of avoiding the whole issue.

I think if more parents would acknowledge that sex is not 'dirty' and would TALK with their kids and TEACH them what it's about and how to REPSECT it... a lot of this would not be happening.

And you know what -- I don't think sex would sell as much anymore either.

That commercial was a 're-enactment' of the Nick and Jessica show.

which they probably should have edited out of the episode!
music has definitely gotten more explicit... but im not sure if the promiscuity is from the KNOWLEDGE of these sexual acts or the lack of. I'm not in direct contact with kids so its hard for me to know.

I agree that if things were more 'open' it might not be as bad as it has come too....I think other countries got it right with their attitudes and ours is that it's all WRONG and that makes kids want to do outrageous things because they simply do not understand....

I remember in 7th grade someone talking about a condom and I didnt even know what it was....Look at 8th graders NOW....

I don't think so. My parents never had a 'talk' with my sister or I. The videos were not quite so sexual, song lyrics were not so explicit and we were not sexually active at 11.

This is a tough topic. In most other countries sex is not taboo as it is here, but 'giving it up' is not that big a deal either. I think other countries attitudes towards sex are healthier than ours, we are way too uptight. But, I am not sure that I would want my 11 year old to be having sex. Not all that uncommon worldwide, fairly new here, but it seems the average age a girl loses her virginity in the US is now 12.
I am not sure who or what is responsible. I tend to blame it on the fact that most teens and/or preteens are home alone in the afternoons whereas we were supervised and they tend to explore and experiment more. Plus, they are exposed to a lot more than we were.
That's my $.50

I think possibly it is also the tv shows.. kids whos parents let them what sex in the city might give the kid the wrong example and let them think sex is casual.

Also I know of a 5 y.o. boy whos parents let him watch the show 'friends' with them. After the show he was commenting how it was great that ross and rachel had sex as friends...

i seriously think the tv shows help kids to think its 'ok', and the lack of parent supervision gives them the time to experiment....
my 2 cents

Re: Spinoff on the bracelet 'game' post

First of all 12 is not the average age girls lose their virginity. Maybe it seems that way, but statistically, it isn't true. i think the media hype does something else that's dangerous...it makes it seem like all kids are having sex. I think that's a big myth that screws with kids heads too. They think everyone's having sex, when statistically for girls, by age 17 only half will have had sex. For boys it's 16, so that's not so bad. I think kids really do think that everyone is having sex and that it's somehow wrong to be a virgin. In High School a kid younger than me patted me on the head and said 'aww, how cute a 16 year old virgin.' As if I was some strange minority. I do think that if parents talked to their kids more they wouldn't get involved in such risky behavior, but the talk has ot be in an honest and open way. I didn't get any talks, just 'Premarital sex is wrong', and I think I turned out ok despite the lack of frank talks, but that whole decree of my mom's gave me a lot of guilt and ahng ups early on. I think the answer really is frnak and honest discussion. Kids get info from frneds and TV , but it's not really accurate..the only way you can be sure your kids are getting accurate info is to give it to them yourself before they find it out somewhere else.

'Secret Sex Lives of Kids
One in twelve children is no longer a virgin by his or her thirteenth birthday, and 21 percent of ninth-graders have slept with four or more partners. An alarming report every parent must read. '
Sex Story in LHJ

12 may not be the average age, but it's a surprising number when I think most of us were climbing trees at that age.
