spinoff to dress crisis. - sort of updated

I was wondering about the hem-to-hollow measurement thing. My dress has a lot of detail on the bottom, and I was not measured for length, only waist and bust.
There is also detail at the waist, so does anyone know how this dress would be altered? I am starting to get concerned...

I would measure the bottom part from where the design ends to the bottom of the dress to see how many inches leway it gives you.

Definately call the salon & ask them! I was told when I ordered mine that there was no way they could do the hm alterations at the salon bc there was too much detail around the hem & the waist! Everything needed to be done at the factory & lifte within!

I was just wondering about the same thing! Not every dress needs to be ordered to length - from the looks of your dress, they can probably take the hem up at the waist, but call your salon for peace of mind.

Good Luck!

I second this completely.

Damn it now I gotta wonder about mine. I'm only 5'3' and I was almost tripping on my dress, and there's a lot of detail on the bottom and at the waist. I gotta call my salon tomorrow.

Maybe each salon and designer has different criteria for the hollow to hem measurement. My dress is very similiar to yours but it has a line of work on the very bottom and a semi cathedral train so I'm ordering a hollow to hem. I'm pretty short though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

this also looks like it can be taken up at the waist 0 under the beaded seam., but again call your place for peace of mind.

Sorry, just thinking about how every Bridal Salon across LI, is getting a call about Hallow to Hem... we're all nuts!

well, I emailed Jasmine, and this was their response:

Ordering custom length hollow-hem is really up to you. It does cost extra so it is your option to pay it or not. You can request it, im sure the bridal store would be happy to let you do that. Otherwise they do the alterations themselves. And only the store has the option to check on a order. I cannot give you that information.

Best Regards,
Jasmine

SO does this mean that the dress can be altered for length with no problem?
Also I don't really understand why I can't check on the status of my dress being ordered. I am paying for it aren't I?

I think they just mean that if you wanted to change your order to a hollow to hem measurement, you would have to do it through the bridal salon. It sort of makes sense, because the salon deals with the manufacturers all the time, and it might get strained between them if they have brides calling in and changing their orders without consulting the bridal salon first. It also changes the price that the salon has to charge you. But anways, back to the question. I'd ask your bridal salon how they will alter your dress, since they are the ones that will be doing the actual alterations. It might be that you can take the dress apart at the waist and do it that way. Good luck.

Thought I would give you an update on mine....

I called my salon today (which is in Brooklyn!!) and I asked about the hollow to hem measurement. First they told me I have 2 inches to play with oh the bottom (which fine, but if you look at the pic of my dress I posted before, I REALLY don't want to do that) However they also said they could take it apart at the waist and adjust the length that way, but it would cost me ANOTHER $200!!!!

WTH??!! I'm already paying $200 for alterations, now they want to tack on another $200 to shorten it?? Ummmm shouldn't that be part of the alterations since not every bride is 5'8'??!! I feel like I'm getting hit with a vertically challenged penalty!!!!

I'm going to find out on Sunday if I need the hollow to hem done, but there's no way in hell I am paying $400 for alterations.

I just saw this...I too have a Jasmine gown w/ elaborate detailing on the front and back. I was initially told it was going to HAVE to be ordered hollow-to-hem, but when I went to order it, the seamstress said they will take the regualt measurements and order the applique/lace (whatever) seperate and she will put it on (HANDsewn). She told me she had just done this w/ a diff dress, same designer and it took her 2 days b/c it was 4 layers of lace/ detailing!!

I know mine was ordered w/ the lace/applique (whatever it's called) seperate. I also had a special order on the neckline, they raised it up 2 inches. Because God blessed me and I DON'T want to be hanging out in church

I have a Jasmine dress also. I had a hollow to hem measurement because I am really short (4'10 1/2'). I think it was an extra $100. My seamstress recommended this because I wouldn's have had enough room on the bottom to take it up.

I am 5'2 and have been to about ten bridal salons in the last two weeks. Every bridal store has recommened to me the hollow to hem. Which I actually am going to do. The dress comes in perfect to you. The only alterations you will then have to worry about is the bodice. I have been quoted $60 -$125.The dress will come made to fit you and you won't have to worry about ruining your beautiful dress.

Now you got me thinking.....

See I was told that my dress is already ordered and will be in around New Years, however....I KNOW it takes 5 months to come in, AND they said 'well it's ordered to come in 3 months before your wedding' which would mean IT'S NOT ORDERED YET!!!!

So if this is the case, when I go on Sunday, I will look into getting either a petite or have the hollow to hem done by the manufacturer.
