They are totally unnecessary and a waste of money. For the most part, you can find any necessary forms online - Otherwise, you'll get the forms when you get to the offices.

Re: Spinoff to Name Change....
I don't think it would be necessary... I didn't know such a thing existed.
All i did was go to DMV ---filled out a form. Changed my license AND the name on my title and registration.
Went to Social Security and showed my marriage license and changed the name on the card.
Called my credit card companies (this they did over the phone
Called the car insurance company (also just over the phone)
Called cell phone company (just over the phone)
Went to the bank and changed my name on my account
Spoke to the people in HR at work... they gave me the proper paperwork to fill out cards for meidcal insurance etc. Changed beneficirary on my policy
Changed name and beneficiary on pension plan through NYS (teachers should do this ASAP)
SOMEONE: AM I MISSING ANYTHING????

Re: Spinoff to Name Change....
i didn't bother with those kits and stuff. cause honestly, each place is different. i found that some of my CC's required that i file a special form from them--while others didn't even need it and i could do it by phone.
contact each place and find out what their procuedres are. i had to send in forms for like 2 CCs, my auto loan, student loans, and savings account. the rest I could do it online or by phone...and then some i just had to fax my license (with my new name) and marriage certificate.
#1 thing--go to DMV first--once your license is changed its VERY easy to change everything else. (the only thing i have left to change is SS -- alllll of my other things are in my married name now)
