Last night I told my FH that he needs to get a w-ring soon. so he says 'oh I forgot to tell you, my mom called me today and found my dad's w-ring, so I think I am going to wear that as my w-ring' (his dad passed away).
I got a little freaked out by this.
I know that many women wear family heirlooms as an engagement ring. But I never heard of a man wearing his dad's w-ring. And it bothers me.
what do you ladies think?

Why does it bother you? I'll tell you why it would bother me...because that ring, as beautiful and meaningful as it is, represents the union between his mom and dad. His ring should be 'fresh' for your new union. Unless he plans to start a family tradition and make it an heirloom...therefore passing it to his son ( ) so that he could wear it and pass it on to his own off spring. Otherwise, new ring please.
ETA: Can you tell I am TOTALLY useless at work today?!

you hit the nail on the head Sasha!! that is EXACTLY why it bothers me. I want his ring to be new and fresh.

Could he wear it, but not as a wedding ring?

Yikes! Yes, that's what I meant by signifying that union between mom and dad...sort of 'replacing' dad...OK, can't even process the thought.
I'm sure it's emotional for him and mom and it's wonderful that she found her late husband's wedding ring, but new ring please!

I too think it's a very nice idea. My FH's brother wears their father's old wedding ring. Even though my FH is the oldest, his brother got married first. I wouldn't have a problem with it.
My FH wears a claddagh his a previous fiancee had made for him. She passed away when they were in their 20's. I don't have any problem with him continuing to wear it.

I actually think it is sweet. I wouldn't mind at all. My cousin did something similar. He and his wife got married with his grandparents rings. They are no longer living, so it is a little different. But, if FH wanted to use his father's ring, I would be fine with that. After all, it must mean a tremendous amount to him for him to want to use it for his wedding.

I think it's sweet and sentimental. My cousin took his fathers ring and added diamonds to it and that is his wedding ring. It's a nice gesture to honor someone.

I think it is sweet. My engagement ring was FH's Grandmother's.

I think its sweet but a little odd. I tried to put myself in your shoes. My DH father passed away when he was young so I am sitting here wondering how I would feel.
But then I realized it doesn't matter what ANYONE has to say about it but you and your FH. I would talk to him about it to see how he would feel.
