i'm not a wine expert and of the few that i've tried, i noticed that i'm leaning towards the sweet types: Riesling and Moscato. aside from these two, can anyone recommend other wines that have the same 'sweetness' or 'lightness'?
(note: i know wine experts have different meanings when it comes to words that describe properties of the wine but i'm using these terms loosely as i'm only a newbie)
TIA!

Re: spinoff: Wine recommendations
What is this for? Are you looking for a wine favor or just a wine to bring to someone's house?
For a white wine, I would go with Pinot Grigio. Everyone tends to like that wine. It's light and has a fruit flavor to it. Chardonay is good too, but it is drier. As far as red wine, most red wines are on the heavy side. I have a few favorties...If I am drinking red wine with friends, I usually go with a Cabernet. For a steak dinner, I love Merlot, especially in the winter time because it has a lot of body to it. We gave out Moltepulciano D'Abruzzo (red) wine as favors at our wedding. It's a very dry, Sicilian, red wine, though. HTH!

good question. definitely not for a favor, its more like wine to bring to a friend's dinner and also for myself to try as well!

If it's for a special occasion, you could always bring Prosecco. Prosecco is a sparkling wine...almost like champagne.
If you really want to go crazy, find out what your friend is cooking for dinner. Certain wines pair better with certain foods. But like I said, you can't go wrong with a Pinot Grigio. That is my favorite white wine to drink.
The only red wine that I can think of that is really sweet is Sherry. My grandmother used to drink it, but it's REALLY sweet. I would never consider drinking it with a meal. How about bringing a dessert wine? Those are always yummy!

I love Reislings also. If you are looking for a wine on the lighter/sweet side, but don't want to get a riesling I suggest Pindar's Winter White.

FH and I really like soviniogn blanc from new zealand. Our favorite is cloudy bay. Its about $25-$30 in the wine store and its screw top (which is my new favorite). It is light and sweet. Defintely not as sweet as muscato which is a dessert wine.

plum wines and other fruit wines (fruits besides grapes) tend to be sweeter. I like them so much better than grape wine.

Re: spinoff: Wine recommendations
if you want a really nice treat, Duck Walk makes a blueberry dessert wine, a boysenberry dessert wine, and an ice dessert wine.
these are the best hands down i have ever tried, but are extremely sweet and are either drank in moderation or used in desserts in moderation.
try the Ice one ($22 a bottle) or the blueberry ($14). you seriously cannot go wrong!

Re: spinoff: Wine recommendations
The grapes are obviously the biggest component of wine, but different vineyards and regions pair grapes with other great ingredients. You can find an 'oaky' or a buttery chardonnay, a super sweet dessert Riesling to a drier Riesling and a semi-dry in between. Very light whites like Sauvingnon Blancs are nice... but aren't as full bodied...some taste like straight alcohol... a bit harsh.
Riseling is my favorite... I do enjoy all wines though. Pindar's Winter White is just great... love it. Osprey's Dominion makes a great Chardonnay - Regina Maris - a bit buttery... I am not an oak fan.
If you like fruity / sweet wines, and are looking for a red, you may want to try a Beaujolais or some merlots have hints of black cherry, berries and apples. HTH

thanks everyone! i'll definitely try all of them out (in moderation of course! maybe i'll get to finish this list in a year or two. haha. i don't really drink that much but it's good to know there are other options!)
