My family is bigger on holiday's than his, but we usually travel around and eat a little with everyone...it's definitely exhausting! FH wants to have the holidays at our house eventually...fun for me!! I HATE to cook!

We do the everyother year thing. This year we are with my family. Christmas time we do Christmas Eve with his family & Christmas day with mine.
we have the same arrangement with christmas, and it works out nicely bc fh is italian--they have the big seafood & presents @ midnight thing--and my fam couldn't care less about christmas eve. for thanksgiving, we go to his mom's in the afternoon and mine in the evening.
why not try to do dessert w/ fh's family since it's not that big a deal for them?

Re: Splitting the Holidays
I am sure you will make it work... Its just the beginning of sacrifice and compromise.. I feel you though.....
My FH parents are in PA and mine are upstate...
Being that him and his mom just had a huge blow out due to her being a ************ we will not be traveling for the holidays. My rents understand that we can not afford it being the wedding is 3 mo away soooooo my sister since she is recently divorced will be with us at our place on tday and we will be at my sisters house on christmas which is cool because I grew up in that house!!
either way I am sure you two will have a great time being that you will be together!!
hugs

I know his family may celebrate differently from yours, however it is still their tradition. And Im sure he wants you to be apart of that. Start alternating years- or if you both are from the same area, maybe the families will eat at different times and you can split the day. It will all work out and become a new tradition for the two of you to share!

Re: Splitting the Holidays
It's really fustrating because his family always wants to go to a restruant for the holidays and Michael and I can't do that anymore. We want to have the holidays at home. We are willing to cook at my mom's house (where we are living) for the holidays. Even if it is a huge crowd. It is just very expensive going to a restruant every holiday and every birthday. Come on people you need to get up and cook something. It is not that hard.

Re: Splitting the Holidays
Well here is a suggestion for a lot of you with this problem. My family lives in PA and I don't get to see them as often as FH gets to see his family. So I am very adament about taking that time to se my family. So next year when we are married my parents agreed to move their Thanksgiving to Friday because really with this holiday it isn't a big deal which day you celebrate cause it's about being together and eating! So we will do Thursday with his family then drive to PA and do it with my family the next day. That way we get to do both and i can spend a few days with my family over the weekend. My parents are just happy they don't have to not have me for the holiday....
So far before we are married we have done separate holidays cause we both aren't really willing to budge....my FH did come down for Christmas eve though and drive back which was great of him.

You girls are all wonderful! I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this. Thanks for all your advice. FH and I had a talk last night and I've agreed to do Thanksgiving dinner with his family, and since once dinner is over they go on as if it's any other day, we're going to stop by my aunt's to hang out with my family. Let's see what happens with Christmas . . . lol
