My hubby will be working at Barnes Jewish, do you have a good ob/gyn doc? Have any of your friends had babies out there? What areas do your rec to live in the closer to the hospital the better. Sorry for all the questions... Thanks

Re: St. Louis. MO
Barnes Jewish is a GREAT hospital. One of the best things about St Louis is the hospitals. Children's Hospital is one of those places that they fly children from all over the country for treatment there. FH is a firefighter/paramedic and has moonlighted at Children's Hospital as a flight paramedic (picking up the kids from Texas, Arkansas, etc) It seems everybody you meet here in St Louis is somehow in the medical field. Our really good friend is a pediatrician at Children's Hospital (which is adjacent to Barnes). I can ask FH more specific questions about it, he grew up here.
I do have an OB/GYN here (I ran out of BC pills and finally decided to find one here) Her name is Dr. Becky Shelton. She is awesome, came highly recommended from FH's doctor Dr. Kenneth Starky (another great doctor). I think they are both affliated with St. Johns though.
Living wise, Barnes is 'technically' in St. Louis city. It is right next to Forest Park, which IMO is one of the nicest parks I have ever seen. I am biased again, b/c FH's mom works there...at the zoo. One of the last free zoos in America. They also have a great Art Museum, History Museum, it was the site of the 1904 Worlds Fair. It is also not that far from Washington University which looks like an Ivy League school. The area around Barnes is the Central West End. I think it is the closest thing to NYC. Cute little cafes and restaurants like SoHo or the village. The areas surrounding Central West End can be shady so it just depends on where you are. I work in Clayton which is another great area. It has more of a mini-city feel than downtown STL. I live in St Louis Hills, which reminds me of Long Island...surburbs central. Most of Saint Louis is surburbs once you get to the county. I would avoid living in North City and parts of North County. Other than that, you can't go wrong. The people are really friendly. I remember my first weekend here, the cashier at the stores started talking to me. For a NYer it was strange but now I am so used to it. They don't have bagel shops or real NY pizza here, but the quality of life makes up for it!!
Oh and Michele, thanks! Actally my avatar is Jessica Alba. The picture in the profile is me
