St. Mary's Church in Roslyn - would not let me get married there

Original post by DjPiLL

I got a ton of recommendations to have my wedding at St. Mary's in Roslyn.

So I call them and they ask me if I am a parishoner or live in the area. I tell them no and they are like 'well you can't have your wedding here'.

*** is up with that? I almost wanted to let it rip over the phone cause I am already having a ****** day today... but I just said it wasn't worth it. I figured their next question would have been 'well are you catholic and received all the sacraments' and I would have said yes but it didn't even get that far.

So now I need more recommendations on a church to get married at. Actually it doesn't even have to be a church..... just someplace nice cause frankly at this point I don't even care if I have a catholic wedding now or not.

Thanks in advance.

I got married at St. Rocco's Church in Glen Cove...it is a beautiful church I would give them a try...however they do charge quite a bit.

Parish Office: 18 Third Street, Glen Cove. New York 11542
Telephone: Parish Office -(516) 676-2482

St. Patrick's Church is located right down the road as well.

Why don't you just get married at the Swan Club? If it's a nice night you can do it in their gradens, otherwise their little chapel is actually the nicest indoor site I've seen (and I went to 18 halls.)

Most Cathiloc churches will not let you get married there if you or your partner are not a parishioner.

Well I guess I was just out of the loop on this one then. I just got so many recommendations for this church... I figured it was just common practice that you can pick any church you want.

Oh well... FW is definitely not going to be happy if I tell her that my church in Queens is the only option. LOL

Knowing this... we will probably just do Historical Chapel.

FYI: it is unlikely that a *catholic* priest will marry you in the Historical Chapel, which is why there's no pre-cana. It also won't be recognized by the catholic church.

I wanted a family friend (a monsignor) to do our ceremony but because DH wanted to get married outside, he refused to do it and when I mentioned the Historical Chapel, that is what he told me. My marriage isn't recognized by the church, much to the dismay of my mother.

Other suggestions: try the chapels of the Catholic hospitals and schools (colleges, high schools, seminaries). Some of them have beautiful, stand-alone chapels that have regular masses that are open to the public.

It will probably help if you know someone affiliated with the hospital/school, too.

What about your FW's church? This way your guests don't have to travel all around

Hey thanks for all the fine replies!

My FW didn't receive all her sacraments.... so its not a must that I have a catholic wedding. As far as I care... just as long as we are legally married that fine with me.

My FW's church is way out east... and it would make no sense for all of my family to haul way out there... then have to haul back to the Swan Club. I'd like to keep it in Nassau.

We were originally going to get married at the Swan Club. But we changed our time from a day wedding to a night wedding at FW's request. We lost the ceremony space for this since it was booked in the evening.

I might give a couple of calls to some of the churches mentioned in this thread. I just want to get this finalized... then get the hotel finalized... then I can pursue the limo situation.

Not too sure on this because each Church is a bit different (ie: more strict or lenient) in the interpretation of rules for who they can marry.
You might want to double check that a church will marry you considering your FW has not made all her sacrements. Like I said I'm not too sure on it. I think if you went with your Church they may not mind that much since your the parishioner (and just because you live in the neighborhood as the Church doesn't make you a parishioner - you or your parents have to have registered there).

Maribelle's right - your FW has to have made confirmation to get married in the Church.

On a side note another church out by Swan Club is St. Hyacinth's

Try Fr. Henry Fehrenbacher. We're both Catholic but my fiance did not make his confirmation. We wanted to have a catholic wedding too. We're having a catholic ceremony at the weddign hall. he is so nice and sweet . I think he's semi-retired but a real live roman catholic priest. We were having a hard time finding a church too because we don't live in NY. FM me iff you need the info.

This is a fairly common practice. St. Mary's last time I checked is down to one priest and I think he commutes to say mass at another small parish on the island.

Ok here is another question.

I checked out the Historical Chapel. It was ok.

Are there any other churches in the area of the Historical Chapel and the Fox Hollow Inn? This is in the Woodbury area.

I really liked the Fox Hollow Inn to stay at. The Historical Chapel was ok... but it didn't knock me off my shoes.

I received all my sacraments but my FW has not.

Rich I think you're just going to have to start cold-calling churches because between the fact that none of the churches in this are your parish churches and your FW has not made all her sacraments you are going to find not alot will marry you. Sorry if that bothers you but that is the way it goes, unfortunately with orgainized religion it can get to be 'business-like'. If you and FW are so intent on getting married in a church would it be that bad to get married in your parent's church? because if it is that important to you your guests will have to deal with travelling from out east to queens and then to roslyn for the reception. you can rent a bus to get them and return them to the hotel if they fly in and don't have any means of transportation. if it's more important to you that you get married near your reception hall for conveinance sake maybe you should look into public or private parks that can accomodate you (if the wedding is during nice weather) or perhaps consider a protestant church. I know a few people that decided to go with protestant because their rules are a bit less strict. However I cannot give any recommendations to those, you'll have to see if there's any listings in the phone book or online. Lastly, call your hall and ask the banquet manager if they have any ideas on where to have a ceremony in that area.

Historicaly chapel doesnt hold many people, depending on wedding, really hot and there is no parking. what i recommend cw post chapel is about 10/15 min drive from there (northwest). Interfaith Center requires nothing to get married in. You have to find your own officant (plenty here on LIW)

We are staying at FoxHollow Inn night before and that night and we get married at Crest Hollow

are you sure they didn't find out that you are a MET fan?
I think that might be the real reason...

Blah... the Interfaith center is not available the weekend of my wedding.

Oh well... think its time to do a search on the site for ideas.

Holy Name of Jesus is on Woodbury Rd close to the Fox Hollow.
St Edwards is also close by in Syosset and Our Lady of Mercy in Plainview on South Oyster Bay Rd.
I know of someone who got married at Our Lady of Mercy that wasn't a parishoner there, so maybe they would be accomodating.
