St. Thomas... yay or nay

St. Thomas... yay or nay

We're officially starting to think of where to go on our honeymoon. My FH thinks that Hawaii is too cliche and way too long of a flight (boo, hiss because I really REALLY want to go there). His other suggestion was St. Thomas.... What do we think???

We visited St. Thomas on our HM Cruise & I thought it was very commericalized. Both DH & I really loved St. Maarten & Tortola...I would look into them!

My sister and her husband just got back from a long weekend in St. Thomas.....they HATED it! You can't even compare Hawaii to St. Thomas....I say you work on your FH and go to Hawaii if you had your heart set on it - it looks so beautiful there. I know so many people who have HM'd in Hawaii and everyone loves it - so what if it's cliche! I'd tell you to do Tahiti b/c that's where I'm going but he won't like that flight if he thinks Hawaii is bad.

Back to St. Thomas though - my sister and her hubby ending up moving to a hotel on St. John for the last 3 nights of there stay b/c they hated St. Thomas so much. I've heard St. Martin is amazing.....also Anguilla is supposed to be so gorgeous. There's this new hotel in Anguilla that's called Ku that has really great rates b/c it's so new...I believe it's the sister resort of Cap Julaca which is gorgeous but expensive! Also on St. Martin I would recommend La Samanna. Or on Anguilla you could also try Cuisinart....fabulous!

Here are some links for you - check them out:

Ku - Anguilla

CuisinArt Resort - Anguilla

La Samanna - St. Maarten

I went to St. Thomas, not on a HM though..It was just ok, nothing that I would consider for a hm, IMO. When we were there though, we took a day trip to St. John and that was really beautiful! Hope that helps a bit..Good Luck!

Recently, we spent 2 days on St. Thomas and 6 on St. John...and IMHO....St. Thomas doesn't compare to St. John in terms of beauty, relaxation, serenity, etc. St. Thomas is ridiculously overcrowded (cruise ships, busy streets, etc.) and although there are nice resorts & beaches, I would definitely go for a more romantic, laid back, serene isle. We stayed at Caneel Bay on St. John and it was paradise (so quiet and so beautiful--you're not waited on 'hand and foot'--you're basically left to enjoy yourselves on 7 of the most beautiful beaches in the world.) Cruz Bay is great for shopping, bars, & restaurants. Also, check out the BVI. We did a day trip to Jost Van Dyke and White Bay there was probably the most beautiful thing I've ever seen (and I've been to Hawaii twice

If your FH is really into St. Thomas, stay in St. John. It is easy to visit St. Thomas from St. John. I stayed at the Westin St. John thru my timeshare and it was excellent!

You have to decide what you are looking for. Personally I do not like Hawaii but if you want the secluded beach feeling on a beutiful island, St. John is a great choice

For HM in Carribean I would suggest St. John, Virgin GOrda (that is where we went so I a biased), Anguilla...heard mixed things about St. Thomas

We wanted to do a day trip to Little Dix Bay, but the Caneel ferry didn't run when we were there; that place looks amazing too!!!

fh and i just came back from st thomas.

there is nothing to do, it's boring and very expensive.. don't get me wrong it's absolutly beautiful... jus to get into a taxi and get places it cost us like 30 its crazy, i mean during the day if you have activities planned it's all great(again very expensive) not worth it.

if you want details fm me...

Yes, proud DVC member here

When i first looked into thw Westin I was told it was hard to get that place, so they put me on the waiting list. I got it in two weeks! You just have to be flexible and early in booking. You can book up to two years in advance since it is an exchange with Interval International. Check the DVC website.

Guess where I am going in August??!! It is me & FH first time going together

ohhhhhhh I am so unflexible when it comes to travel time since I teach! I hope I'll be able to get the Westin St. John in April--I'm calling today!!!!

Re: St. Thomas... yay or nay

St. Thomas is a beautiful island, but you can't beat the beaches on St. John. If you go to the touristy spots on St. Thomas, then it is very commercialized and crowded, especially when the cruise ships are docked on Magen's Bay. Just stay away from those beaches during the weekdays.

if you are going on your honeymoon, i would definitely look into staying in St. John, then take day trips to St. Thomas and the BVI-there are great beaches and snorkeling/scuba if you're into that.

i've been to hawaii and there are certain spots that are commercialized there too. work with a good travel agent and get suggestions from people you know who have been to both, and i'm sure you guys will have a great HM.
