Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

Thanks Rach! I sadly have a feeling that we might be having one on Monday! and my students have tests that they need to finish- they ran out of time yesterday- our new principal is um a little- how do I say this um long winded (really nice guy though) and the announcements ran into the class time so they didn't finish and now they won't get to finish until Tuesday and I have to enter grades on Thursday- ugh the stress!

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

Oh boy, I know that kind of stress. Our marking period ended the day after the last snow day, and my kids NEEDED this quiz to bring up their averages, so I had a classroom full of kids during lunch trying to take their quiz.

Ohh, ohh, I have got to tell this story. It's still infuriating me. Ok, I have my fifth grade class first period, and there is this one girl who started at our school in the end of October. She looks like a little woman. Very stiff and proper and prim. She ALWAYS carries this little purse around (NONE of my kids, not even the 8th grade girls carry ANYTHING, they're not allowed to.). So she carries her purse because she's the only one in her grade to have her period(yes, her mother made sure everyone knew.) Anyway, so she does not come to school when she has her period, or she'll come to school late everyday, blah, blha. Well, her parents make every excuse in the book for this kid. So anyway, needless to say, she missed A LOT of notes in my class. So I told her to get the notes from another student in the class because we were having a quiz the following week. Then I told her to come back to me if she could not get them and I would give them to her. So, she never came back....leaving me to assume she got the notes. Well, her mother writes a note to me the day before the quiz saying, 'Dear Miss R., Please excuse Michelle from the quiz tomorrow, she does not have all of the notes. Instead, she has done a report on Mozart and Beethoven for you to grade.' UM, EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?!?!?! So I look at this 'report', and she PLAGIARIZED OFF THE COMPUTER! She took a webpage about the two composers and put her name on it as her quiz. So I wrote back to her mother, 'Dear Mrs. N., I received your letter, and it is not possible for Michelle to replace the quiz with a report. Michelle was told to get the notes from another student last week and to come back to me if she could not get them. She did not come back, therefore I am left to assume she received them. I am enclosing a copy of the notes that she missed, as well as a copy of her report. I am sure that her efforts of doing the report combined with her ability to study tonight will help her be successful on the quiz.' Fine, so I write this letter, and SHE NEVER SHOWS UP FOR SCHOOL THE NEXT MORNING FOR HER QUIZ!So I found her at lunch and made her take it. ARGH! SO ANNOYING! So anyway, after she takes it, she gives me this other note from her mother saying, 'Michelle will take a retest if she does poorly.' AGAIN, EXCUSE ME?!?!?! Are you f-ing kidding me? So I showed the principal and she told me, no, it's a school policy to not retest and that this woman has been doing this to ALL of the kid's teachers. But I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO aggravated. Talk about making excuses for your daughter. Her french teacher told me that when she was reading her report in front of the class, she kept saying things like, 'WOw, I didn't know that!' and 'WOW! That's interesting.' Well, hello, if YOU wrote the report, you would KNOW WHAT WAS IN IT!

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

Don't you love that!!

I got a note from a parent on Thursday of this boy that honestly wouldn't know his own hand from another students. So the parent tells me that he (the parent) let all of Ian's packets (20 something of them) to John's mother because John needed them for his new school and that the parent forgot to photocopy them before he gave them to John's mother and that Ian can't study for the Midterm.

So I write back- It is not a midterm- we don't give midterms in the 7th grade! It is an end of quarter test and that I am looking at the 2 packets that Ian needs for this. I also then tell him I need him to list ALL the packets that Ian does have so that I can pull the ones that he needs. Well, don't you know all of the sudden that night they all mysteriously returned.

(this boy John was in my class until he moved and would have had all the same packets to start with! We do not use the textbook so these packets have all of their notes, homework and classwork in them- so it is harder to lose)

Sometimes parents make you wonder!

I will still never forget the parent that told my friend I don't call you when he doesn't make his bed, don't call me when he doesn't do his homework! There are many many other things I have heard but that is the one that makes me laugh every time!

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

Sorry to jump in but my friend who teaches 4th grade had a student tell her once.

They don't give us these tests to test us, they give it to test you to make sure your doing your job.

You know they got that from their parents

ETA: she was talking about the 4th grade testing

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

LOL and the sad thing Stacey is they it is somewhat true! Not completely that we are doing OUR jobs but the the district is doing THEIR job- in total- put a curriculum in place, hiring good teachers- etc.

Honestly- I feel bad for the 4th graders and even more so for the 8th graders! Gone are the days where children are allowed to be kids! These kids are under so much pressure that they can no longer just go out and play- do you know some of my 7th graders are taking the SAT's today!

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

OMG! I thought I was HEARING THINGS in school yesterday when my 7th graders were talking about the SAT's! THEY ARE ALL TAKING THEM! (granted we only have like 15 of them, but still).
My favorite quote from a parent came at conference time last quarter when the mom said to one of my friend's who is a homeroom teacher, 'You see her more than I do, YOU deal with her!' and then she hung up on my friend. Can you believe that?!?!?!?!

No Rachel you weren't hearing things!

Isn't it sad that she can admit without even thinking twice that she doesn't spend anytime with her daughter-that is so sad!

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

I know, EXTREMELY sad, but apparently in the private school world it's not that uncommon. I can't even tell you how many maids and house keepers we had at back to school night

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

My MIL is a teacheer and I hear the same stories.

I simply amazes me how parents are too busy to even pay attention to their children. When the kids are first born I am sure they more then enough attention, but once they start to become people parents just don't have the time.

I was in Michaels the other day with MIL checking out some books. THese 2 women with two came into the end of the isle. The kids we screaming and knocking the books all over he place and the parents just stood there ignoring them . Meanwhile MIL and I were like how can you let your kids act like that in public.

So then they left the isle, so did we and I got on line. Wouldn't you know it the brat was right in front of me with her sister. She kept screaming to her mother in the back of the store 'HURRY UP, I AM ONLINE!!!!!', 'COME ON, HURRY UP!!!'. Now this went on for a good 5 minutes. Well I would not stand it anymore and I turned to the kid and said ' Could you please stop yelling , it's hurting my ears', well she looked at me like'what?'. well I think noone ever said anything to her. she got so upset she left the line. the people around me looked at me like 'how dare you say anything to someone else's child'.

I am sorry. Why do I have to put up with a child that is not diciplined. Not my problem. That was the first time I ever said anything, but I think I will keep saying something. Kids have no respect for their parents.

Re: STACY! 2nd Time Around!

Well, how is a child supposed to have respect for their parent when that parent doesn't teach them to have it? Y'know? Good for you for saying something, though. I would have said something to the mother if it were me.

I would have said something to the mother, but she was a good 25 feet away and I was not going to lose my place in line
