this might sound stupid, but do they really skin animals alive? how is that not-illegal?

When they gas these animals to 'death' they toss them in a container and shove the tube in to gas them. More often than not, the gas just knocks the animals out, not dead, and that is how they wind up being skinned alive. So the story goes...I've seen some pretty horrid videos - I don't think these 'farmers' have much compassion for the animals as a living being.

As for the drug testing...it has been proven time and again that alternative methods are more effective than testing on animals - who bear no resemblance to our chemical make up. I don't really see the drug testing going away...I would like to see cosmetic and household product testing on animals go away though.

You're welcome.

Procter and Gamble and Lever Bros are the worst offenders of testing cosmetics/products on animals...P&G came out with some BS a couple of years ago where they would stop testing on current products and would only test on new ones. Well, shortly after, every product came out as 'New and Improved' - so I guess they slimed their way out of that one.

I don't know, but I saw this thing on the Peta website about 'kosher' cattle not really being kosher because they don't die a quick death. It was very disturbing.
I really wish I had the willpower to be a vegetarian, but I admit I'm lazy.

And people say how Peta doesn't care about people, but it's not entirely true. They are against leather also because the people who work in tanneries have high incidences of cancer.

Just wanted to comment on this, because it's COMPLETELY REDICULOUS. Not you, Tracy, PETA.

OK, the whole Point of the Kosher style of slaughter is that When The Torah Was Written, it was the most humane method possible. For those who don't know, the Kosher slaughter method is a cut to the jugular with a clean, very sharp blade so that the animal passes out quickly and suffers very little.

So now, I'm quite sure that in modern times there are more humane methods to kill an animal. However, The laws of Kosher are VERY literal, and so they are followed to the letter rather than carrying out the idea behind it. While I'll agree that the practice is outdated, you can't rewrite the Torah. So even though it isn't the most humane way possible, it's still more humane than the methods used in some non-Kosher slaughterhouses.

Personally, I can't stand PETA. I agree with their basic principles, but I think they go too far. I prefer to support the ASPCA as they are a more legitimate organization, less inappropriate, organization.

As for wearing fur, I don't do it. I take a Native American stance on animal skins - you eat the meat, you wear the skin. Don't let any of it go to waste. Therefore, I eat cow, I wear leather.

But I don't wear chicken or turkey skin. That's just too weird.

Animals are skinned alive...first they are usually clubbed in the head several times, and then they skin them, and throw their carcass onto a pile....there is a video on the PETA webiste, and the skinned animal is still blinking and moving his head before it dies.

Watching that video was so difficult, but it's a reality of what happens in some areas (others skin animals via electrocution first).

The Kosher method of slaughter is supposed to be a humane death, from what I was told, after the cut to the jugular is made, the animal is supposed to be left to die, and not touched until death, allowed to die peacefully. (I may be wrong in my understanding of this practice, so please correct me if I am)

THe problem that PETA has (with a few of the Kosher slaughterhouses, NOT ALL of them) is that the animals are in these contraptions that hang them upside down, ripping their bones apart, pulling joints out, (sometimes they are suspended upside down like this for 3-5 minutes in absolute fear, terror, pain because they are not stunned and completely conscious...they are upside down because the meat can't be tainted with blood of a previously slaughtered animal) and then they are disposed of by the floor dropping and their bodies crashing on other animals that have sometimes yet to die...

I don't think PETA has a problem with the actual kosher slaughter, it's just that some of these slaughterhouses are not really practicing the slaughter the way it's supposed to be done, and animals are needlessly suffering.

I'm not saying stunning an animal before slaughter is 'good' either...I'm a vegitarian, and any slaughter sickens me.

I remember watching a video showing this slaughter on CNN and it was disturbing, there was a rabbi commenting on how the ritual slaughter was being performed incorrectly and he was upset to see this.

I read somewhere that they called her Al Sharpton in drag. Trust me, I am not an animal activist by any means but I cannot STAND her.
