I need to do this for our taxes...is there a form online or something?

YES!! You could also call 516.571.1500 and they will mail it to you.. Also you can go onto the municipal taxes site and download it.. do a search for basic star program and you'll see it ..

FYI, form must be submitted befoer Jan. 2

I believe you will need the deed to your house. We are applying for the Star Program as well. I have heard it will not take effect for one year after you apply.

I had to fill out my paperwork but it doesn't take effect right away. It is a once a year thing and will take effect in March. So I had to pay 'full' taxes all this year and up until it takes effects.

What exactly is the 'Star Program'? I've seen this in several ads, but have no idea what it is.

It's the School Tax Relief Program that provides a partial exemption from school property taxes.

You can only apply for STAR on your primary residence. For instance, if you have additional property that you own and rent out, you cannot get STAR on those.

you must apply for this! you can only apply once, but if the previous owners did, then you have for yourself. we did it and it saved us $1,222 off of our taxes! it went into effect 6 months after the application date. the due date for applying was a few days after we closed. you should have seen DH and I down in the Mineola offices with all our closing paperwork trying to get this done!

due dates vary depending on county you are living in.

fiance and i closed on a house in august - the star program set by the sellers earlier in the year will be in effect through february of 2004.

we will need to apply ourselves by march 1st -suffolk county deadline.

call tax office and find out what they say
