To all the home owners (not condo or co-op's), when you bought your house, did you think:
A. This is just a starter...we will be movin on up!
or
B. This is the house i will die in...The one, the only

Re: Starter or Permanent
I'm not a homeowner yet as you know but we are thinking when we do look, we will look for a start up of sorts. Something we can build onto...but we have the luck of having a contractor in the family. We DO NOT want something we have to 'fix-up' , just something smaller that we can add onto if need be. The value always ends up being ( in cases I have seen) a nice sized profit and that would give us the ability to move to larger is need be, or keep as investement.
For example- my BM bought a small one bedroom in PERFECT condition for about $225,000. Her husband is the contractor, and he and some hired help are making the house as large as permits allow for a total of only about $100,000 or a little more. My sister is an apprasier who says based on the blueprints alone( actual apprasiels are usually better) they would be looking at a $450,000 house at this point...less then a year from purchase ...thats a $125,000 profit in a YEAR.
Sorry so long...

Re: Starter or Permanent
We started out looking for a starter but then we realized what a little more money can get you and we went for it.

Re: Starter or Permanent
Our house can be either. There is a lot of room for expansion, so when the time comes that we need more room we can either move or add on I like having my options open! I really like it here, but then again if we are really rich someday I would love to have a waterfront home... so you never know.

B - The original house that we were going to buy was more of a starter (to us) but after the deal fell through we bought a house a little further east and spent a little more. We got a house that i wouldn't need to move out of.

For B-We will not out grow this house. If we move out, it is only because we move out of state or something. We have no reason to leave.

I'm going to go with 'C' - none of the above. We didn't buy a starter house, but I don't think we'll die in this one either.
Our house is plenty big to grow into and not out of, but I don't think its the perfect house forever.

We will begin with a starter home. The areas we are looking in we definitely can't afford our dream house as of yet.

Ditto. We bought a house we could either expand on and live in forever, OR we may potentially move to a bigger house if prices and circumstances allow it. We were looking for a house like that - we didn't want to buy a smaller starter with the intention of definitely having to move.

Re: Starter or Permanent
We bought a starter. Not necessarily because we can't afford a nice permanent house, but because we don't plan to live in this area for long. So it's really more of a 'transition home', I guess.

Re: Starter or Permanent
We bought a permanent house. 5 BRs so lots of room to grow with a nice amount of land, at least by Essex County standards. If I ever stop working in NYC, we might move to western Jersey for more land.
We were able to forego the starter and make a big down payment because my husband is in finance and got a huge bonus this year. Otherwise, we probably would have gotten something smaller.

Defintely a starter, our plan is to move in 5 years, but keep this house and rent it out.

Re: Starter or Permanent
We are somewhere in between. I can definitely see myself staying in our house for many many years... there's alot of room change, expansion, growth, etc. But at the same time, I've always wanted a new construction home and we've considered moving to florida b/c the type of house you can get there for the same money blows LI real estate out of the water!
So we could choose either...

Re: Starter or Permanent
We consider ours a starter however its not because of lack of space! When we were looking I thought to myself, if need be could I live here forever! My parents bought their 'starter' home in 1968. It was a 3 bedroom 2 bath cape, with little storage. Their plan was to move in 5-10 years. Well 3 years later they had my 2nd brother who had a lot of illnesses until he was about 10 years old! The medical bills were more important than buying a new house so my dad still lives there! So I didnt want to be in a position that limited me! So we bought a 3 bedroom 2bath ranch with a nice peice of property! However we hope to one day get more of a colonial with a second garage and more property possibly in a different area. We will see!
