In the interest of saving some money, I thought about possibly doing a save the date email.... I had gotten an email from the knot, which is what gave me the idea...It wouldn't just be a regular email, it would be formatted nicely, etc. But, is that completely tacky and cheap? I wasn't going to do STD's at all, but when I saw this, I thought it was kind of a fun idea....thoughts anyone? Is anyone else doing this? Help!!!!

Re: STD email??? opinions please!
I would send actual STDs - not every one I know has email, especially my uncles and aunts .. .you know? And if you go through vistaprint, you can get GREAT deals. Check them out before you send an email. I think a paper STD is much more personal.

I agree. My mother doesn't look at email, and my FMIL would not know how to figure it out. She might even delete it thinking it was spam.
I sent out STD's and actually wish I hadn't. I feel it ties me into the guest list and am wishing that I had more freedom to change it. But, since I sent the STD's I am now tied to the original list I made. I can add, but not reduce and I really was hoping to cull it down further. Oh well! My only point is that not sending STD's is not the worst thing in the world IMHO
If you want to save on STD's maybe just send them to out of towners so they can make their travel arrangements. Otherwise, just let people know about the date by word of mouth.

I would compromise. You can send an email STD to your/FH's friends and those who you know are more 'techy'. But then you can send your/FH's families and older guests regular STDs, this way you won't have to order as many.

I agree. DH & I made our own STD's we got an invitation kit from Staples. I think the cost of the kit was $25.
matte finish, white envelopes, writing on back all included in all. There was an additional shipping and processing charge of $15.70.
I loved the cards...they were on nice paper, didn't seem flimsy. They did it just how I wanted it.

i don't think its tacky or cheap. in our case we had a lot of family who are older or not as technologically advanced as some, so we opted for a more traditional approach. if you had that as well and still opt for the email, maybe you could phone those people to inform them

I agree. If its about saving money, use vistaprint. I used them and loved it. I rcvd a email from them re free announcements and all I ended up paying for was shipping. Not everyone is tech savvy so I wouldnt just use the email STDs

This is a good point. I am sending mine out soon, but I am NOT sending them to everyone on the list. My list is almost all family, but I am really only sending the STD's to family and close, close friends. Anyone I am unsure about, they ain't getting one in case we change our minds. So do be careful about that. Not everyone needs one, either!

Re: STD email??? opinions please!
just be careful with vistaprint they are always changing the prices - get them on a good day.. i did magnets - at first it was 50 for 30 $ but thenafter we ordered it was 50 for 15 $ we were able to get a price adjustment it but later on when i needed to order more it was 13 $ for 25 but two seconds later after i ordered it was $8 for 25 and they wouldnt let me get a price change. ... not that it was too much of a difference but every bit helps!
oh and email - not a bad idea- but i like the idea to send to some via email and send out to others via mail
good luck!

Regarding Vista Print I order My STD PostCard (where I am going to attach the magnet too) 100 for free and 10 flat invites (with the same info and same size but with the information in another language) for free too.. For all that I just paid $8.75 for shipping... I think it was a great deal

Re: STD email??? opinions please!
We did the email save-the-date from theKnot, and I thought it was great. We didn't send it to everyone on the list, just the people we really want to come. Since we have so many OOT it made a lot of sense, and we were planning on a short time frame, but we really needed people to start booking hotel rooms and things. I know most girls on here will tell you do the paper one, it's nicer, but I honestly don't think it matters. The email worked fine for us. The older people who we really want to come, our mothers called anyway, so it was fine. It served its purpose for me!
We were also able to send a 'newsletter' which we did this week reminding people to book their hotel rooms, since we need to increase our block size but can't do it until the block is full. In our case, we already have 60 hotel rooms blocked at 2 hotels and will use at least that many, so it really made sense for us.....

You can also try 'The greeting village' $24 for 100 STD's (including envelopes and labels). Google the site. I got mine from them and they were prompt (one week) and great quality. They are not magnets, but instead they are a card with a peal sticker that you can place on the specific day of wedding on calendar. Everyone loved it!!!!

Re: STD email??? opinions please!
STDs (hard copy or otherwise) are optional, although obviously it's a nice thing to do for OOT guests. VistaPrint, as mentioned above, can cut the cost of getting them dramatically.
FTR, I've only received one hard copy STD ever. All others were e-mail or word of mouth.

i do not think it is tacky...but i would maybe be concerned with those who do not use the internet...like grandparents or older guests...how would you address these people? I got my STD's at the time through magnetstreet.com...they were not expensive...i think i got about 100 for maybe $60...good luck
