So, I've read a million times that the formality of your wedding is set by the invitations you choose. Does this apply to STD's as well? I have seen so many really cute STD cards, but they are all cute - I want my wedding to be really formal and our invitations are going to be very traditional classic ecru cranes engraved invites. Somehow the STD's that I've seen don't seem to go. What do you think? Are there formal STD's?

I have seen some formal 'note cards' (I think they are engraved) used as save the dates....they should be part of your invitation set.
I don't know if the STD would set the tone though, especially if your invite is the last thing they see...

You can easily make your own STD & make it as formal as you want, IMO.

I don't think the STD will really set the tone re: formality. I would rely on the invitations for that.

I agree. I have also seen friends who have had formal weddings and their STDS were cutsey.
