I agree it is so rude for an excessive amount of time to go by before you receive a TY note, however in defense to some people... if you are doing a picture with your thank you card..these things take a lot longer to make than you think.
My wedding was 11/02/02 and I have NOT gotten my proofs yet!! So after I get my proofs and pick out the picture, they told me it will take another 3-4 weeks to create the TY's. (I'm not doing an insert, the entire card is a picture). I am really anxious to get them out, but I am limited by how long the photographer is taking!! We spread the word that my thank you's will be late and I also composed a line that I am going to write on all of them apologizing for the delay. But I just wanted to give the other side of the story.

Shamma I agree with you. If you cant send a TY then you should not accept a present.

I think within a year of the wedding is the technical timeline...its the same time line for people to get a present to you. Although, most everyone I know got them out between 3-6 months. Stef...I think 4 months is totally fine!

I think when the bride comes out and tells you oh i just dont have the time to send out thank you's is really rude. She had the time to open my gift, she should have the time to send me a thank you

Chip: I think writing lots of thank yous is more work than you may realize, especially when you want to write something personal and meaningful in each one. That is no excuse not to do them, they are NOT optional so you just have to hunker down and get them done. When you only have 1 or 2 to do, it may seem like nothing. But if you have 100, its a daunting task. Just FYI.

Well I have not received one from a friend but she had about 700 people at her wedding. So I think I may get my thank you 2004.

I was in a bridal party over 4 years ago, and I'm still waiting for a thank you card...the couple already has two kids!!

According to both Dear Abby (And Ann Landers) and Miss Manners, 6 months is the absolute latest a couple should wait before sending thank yous out - they said even if it takes longer than that, make SURE they get sent...better late than never. If you don't people will get pi$$ed and they will stay pi$$ed and some will never forgive you....

I understand its over 100 thank you's, but if you do a little each day then you should be able to send out your thank you's in a good amount of time. Even if you do lets say 10 a day, which should be about 2 hours (give or take) then in 2 weeks you should have covered your thank you's to your guests. But not getting one I think is the rudest thing ever.

I agree that if you do a few a day, its not that big of a deal...but after the wedding you just are tired of doing that sort of stuff and want a break (at least that is how I am). I expected to have my Thank Yous out months ago since Im usually very on top of these things but with the holidays, etc.. I just let it go to the bottom of the list which is very unlike me. In any event, you may understand more after your own wedding when that pile of thank yous is the last thing in the world you want to do (or maybe you will you have them finished before your honeymoon is over, everyone is different). That is not excuse not to have them done within a reasonable amount of time or even worst to tell a gift giver that they are 'too busy' to write them at all, Im just trying to explain it from a newlywed point of view. Lots of girls need more time than 3 months...I could have done them long ago so I dont have a valid excuse but I have friends who really could not have done them in 3 months due to having a heavy work/school load so I try to bend the 'rules' in those cases.

My co-worker had over 700 guests at her wedding and her TY's were sent out at the 4 month mark - I was impressed!!

Chip - you are right, it is exremely rude to not send a TY. I couldn't imagine telling people I don't have time to be gracious

Freinds and family would understand waiting a couple of months. But after 5 or 6 months, I start wondering what happened if I don't receive a TY.(IMO)

Totally understandable if you have a hectic schedule (school/work, etc) but to just tell someone you cant be bothered or just dont have the time is really not an excuse. Its like paying taxes yea we hate to do it, we know we have to, and it gets done. TY's have to get done.

If you cant be bothered writing a thank you then why did you bother taking the gift.

Stef, though I am not married yet, and I understand what you mean. I would not be offended if I did not get a TY within 3 months. I went to 2 weddings in August and 1 in October and have yet to receive a TY. It hasn't bothered me yet. However a years time and over I may raise an eyebrow.

Now that I think about it, I was at another wedding last november (2000) and I've seen the ty's in some of my friends' homes, but I never received one! Its as if they sent to closer people (one person was a cousin, the other person was in the BP) but not to the others, like me who weren't obligated to be there!

There have been a couple of instances where we haven't received a TY card. I honestly forgot that I didn't get them. I have too many things to worry about or be upset b/c this one didn't thank us for the gift. I know etiquette states: yadda yadda yadda but to me it doesn't bother me at all.
