Sticky situation with Dad, Mom and their SOs...

Original post by JimmysBride

My parents are divorced. My mom is recently remarried and her and my dad can just barely be civil around each other. My dad hates her new husband (without knowing a thing about him). My dad has a live-in girlfriend. She is 3 years younger than me, his daughter. Yes, you read that correctly. Needless to say, I am not exactly proud of him and his choice in girlfriend, but nevertheless she will be at the wedding.

My mom is willing to walk out of the church with my father. She already asked her new husband NOT to come to the church (I don't agree with that AT ALL and told her so) yet she wants to walk in with him (her husband) into the reception hall and be announced with his last name (which she did not even legally take).

She has suggested that my Dad should walk into the reception hall with one of his sisters, NOT his uh, 'chiquita banana' as my FMIL lovingly refers to her. I almost want to agree with her because I can just picture the looks of horror on FHs family's faces when my Dad walks in with a girl younger than his own daughter.

I don't know how to handle this. I don't want to make everyone uncomfortable. Also, shouldn't there be some sort of consistency? If my Godfather walks my mom down the aisle in church and then back down, then who walks with my father? I would like some suggestions from you girls on how to handle the processional, recessional, and the hall entrance, please!

Now that you guys probably think that my parents are both certifiable (between my mom and her dress issues and now my dad and his chiquita banana) let me just tell you all that me and my little brother turned out just fine.

I must have missed something about why your mom's husband isn't walking her in and out of the church. They are married now. Do you not want him there? Too bad if your dad doesn't like it. After he's done walking you down the aisle, I actually wouldn't care what he did. His babe can sit in the pew behind him and I would let him walk out with her. No one will probably notice at that point. Everyone will be chatting and wanting to see you outside the church. Your dad and his girlfriend will be talked about anyway later on, so let him have his way at the reception. They are probably used to people staring and he must be proud of her and himself. This is no reflection upon you so try not to concern yourself about it. You have enough to worry about.

Well coming from the fact DH's parents are CHILDREN and can't be in the same room - FIL cheated on MIL and left her to marry the women cheated with - FIL and SMIL have been married now 20 years BUT MIL is still upset with the whole thing and it is a mess (MIL never remarried).

We actually had a problem AT the church with them!!!!! (involved with shoving etc)

Anyway - DH's easiest solution - we DON'T introduce the parents - my parents were FINE with that - and it solved the problem of who walks in - we just introduced the bp and us.

OMG I have not even thought about this!! (There are some things about my wedding that I am really not looking forward to )

What if you just introduce your mother and father (separately) at the reception and not either one of their significant others or only introduce the bridal party, you and FH.

I don't think your dad's girlfriend should be introduced...because they are not married.

can you have them say something like...

'mother of the bride _____ escorted by _____'

and

'father of the bride _____ escorted by _____'

My nutty FMIL has a SO that happens to be female and my parents are deceased. My family is really religious and would **** bricks if FMIL was announced with her female friend. It is our day and we are paying for it, so to save my family therapist bills we will be the only ones introduced. BTW, my family is not racist or prejudice they are just religious. I don't beleive it is proper ettiquette to introduce your dad's girlfriend because they are not married so she has no relation to you. But, your mom IS married so she should be announced with her husband.

i totally don't understand this...

just because people aren't married they don't exist? what if she liked the girlfriend, i'm sure an exception would be made then... the married/not married is a non-issue for me personally, but can be a good 'excuse' not to introduce her...
