Stop smoking success?

I am officially trying to stop smoking as of today and I already am having a hard time. Can any of you quitters give any good advice? I'm using the patch and have SUCH reason to quit as two people I know have recently been diagnosed with cancer. I know I have to quit, have been smoking on and off for 13 years , UGHH, thats sounds so bad. I'm just hoping if I quit now my body wil lrecover from all the damage I've done. I wish I had NEVER started....Any advice, or tips???

Hi Elle!!

Congrats!! Taking the first steps and committing to quitting is the hardest part.

I quit back in June and while it was really hard at first it gets easier and I feel much better.

Ask people around you to be supportive & patient (I was cranky and short tempered for a about week - which passes)

I wish had some secret to share with you but I don't.

Good luck and come to us for support

Plenty of water and a strict exercise routine helped me alot.

This is rather long but I found it very interesting. From thetruth.com

About 1 out of every 5 deaths in the US can be attributed to tobacco products.

Every eight seconds, someone in the world dies due to tobacco.

In 1999, one year after agreeing to stop billboard advertising, tobacco companies increased advertising spending by 33% in magazines with more than 15% youth readership.

In 1990, 72 million bottles of a popular mineral water were voluntarily recalled because of small traces of benzene. The smoke from one pack of unfiltered cigarettes has as much benzene as 169 bottles of the contaminated water.

How do infants avoid secondhand smoke? 'At some point they begin to crawl.' -- Tobacco Executive 1996

In as little as 2 weeks nicotine changes the brains chemistry and addiction can begin.

In 2001, tobacco companies spent about $11 billion marketing their products. That's about $1.5 billion more than the year before.

In 1990, a tobacco company put together a plan to stop Coroners from listing tobacco as a cause of death on a death certificate.

Cigarette smoke contains 11 chemical compounds that are known to cause cancer.

1 out of 3 smokers are estimated to eventually die from a tobacco-related disease.

Over 50,000 people a year die from secondhand smoke in the US alone.

Cigarette smoke contains the radioactive isotope Polonium-210.

In 1989, millions of cases of imported fruit were banned after a small amount of cyanide was found in just two grapes. There's thirty-three times more cyanide in a single cigarette than was found in those two grapes.

In the mid 90's, a major tobacco company planned on boosting sales of their cigarettes by targeting a new consumer market: gays and homeless people. They called their plan Project Sub-Culture Urban Marketing. Also known as Project SCUM.

Cigarettes will eventually kill a third of the people who use them.

Tobacco signage is often placed at a child's eye level.

One tobacco company developed a genetically altered tobacco with twice the addictive nicotine of regular tobacco. They code-named it 'Y-1.'

In 1984, one tobacco company referred to new customers as 'replacement smokers.'

Over 80% of all adult smokers started smoking before they turned 18.

Tobacco companies make $1.8 billion from under age sales

Pee contains urea. Some tobacco companies add urea to cigarettes.

Tobacco companies make a product that kills 440,000 Americans a year.

Tobacco companies make a product that kills 1,200 Americans a day.

2,000 teens start smoking everyday.

Tobacco companies make a product that kills about 50 Americans each hour.

In the 1970s, tobacco companies started making light cigarettes by putting tiny holes in the filters to let extra air mix with the smoke. They found they could get low readings of toxic agents from FTC-type cigarette testing machines.

In 1980, a tobacco company considered looking at itself as a 'drug company.'

The impact of nicotine is jacked up because tobacco companies add ammonia.

Every year, 95% of people who try to stop smoking are not successful.

In the US, smoking causes about 445 new cases of lung cancer every day.

Tobacco kills more Americans than AIDS, drugs, homicides, fires, and auto accidents combined.

Cigarette smoke contains benzene, carbon monoxide, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide and polonium 210.

KEEP BUSY, I quit six weeks ago and have not had one drag of a cigarette!!

I know it sounds cheesy, but I make lists of things that I have been putting off for a long time, cleaning out clothes, drawers, things like that. Everytime I feel a craving, I do something and it passes.

I hope this helps.

fh has one month and i am so proud of him. he used nicorette a couple of years ago, then the patch which gave him crazy dreams, then hypnosis, which worked for awhile, but then finally a month ago, he tried nicorette again and so far so good. he had one bad day, but it's okay. he has mentioned that he is chewing less and less gum and it's still hard, but better. one thing is that he would always declare when he was quitting and then it wouldn't work, so i said to him, do it when YOU are ready, and don't say anything so if it doesn't happen, you will not feel like you failed. so he tried and only told me after 3 days that he was smoke free. i carry gum for him when we go out so that if he forgot it, he has back up nicorette. much much luck to you!!! i wish you the best!

I quit on New Year's Day cold turkey. It is difficult but so worth it. Just keep your eye on the prize. Think about how much good you are doing for your body. I try to focus on how much better I feel. My breathing is better, my allergies, my singing voice, my tastebuds work better, there are so many positives. Hang in there!!!!! You can do it!!!!!

I quit on December 25, 2001 cold turkey. All I did was start chewing gum every time I had a craving. Besides, my great incentive was that with working out it was a lot easier getting through the workouts with not smoking.

Re: Stop smoking success?

I always hear most success with cold turkey...but I quit very very slowly!!

really starting when ultra lights came out (1998 or so?) the first time I had it it felt like literally inhaling air and I threw them in my glove compartment...eventually out of desparation I finished the pack and eventually/slowly was satisfied with Ultra lights (in college I had down the same with mediums-lights)

eventually I quit in the summer of 2001, but would have 1 on my ride home from work...and then of course on the weekends when drinking...

I guess what truly helped (although I am totally against this policy) was the no-smoking in bars...breaking this habit was tought...and we always tried to go to outside bars...but eventually I lost my taste for them...

then I started hating how DH smelled after smoking and complained enough that he is now down to 1 a day...

I will have an occasional cigarette or 2 or 3...but I usually regret it the next day...amazing how 3 hurts just as much as the pack does...

good luck

Re: Stop smoking success?

Thanks everyone! I made it through day one and it wasn't that bad. The patch really helped, I am a bit surprised, since I smoked for so long I figured the patch might not work but so far, so good. We even went out had some wine and my FI smokes (although he says he is proud of me for quitting and he will too!!) and I still didn't. I know everyone says it is so hard when you drink. I even worked out yesterday, first time in a long time, so I'm feeling good about this. Thanks for all you advice and stories. Sounds like a lot of people quit out there. I'm kind of surprised cold turkey works so well! Good for all of you! I hope to be (AND STAY!!) on the quitters side!!!

I wish I could say the same for DH. He just can't smoke in the house or around the baby!!!

Our best man just quit a few weeks ago he was tired of his FI turning around in the car and pretending that their was a baby back there. She would say 'yes taylor daddy didn't love you that is why he smoked and isnt here with you now B/C HE IS DEAD'
The first time she did it we were all laughing after that it kinda sank in that he was hurting himself and he gave it up. Now when ever he wants a cigg she gives her little line.

But he did go cold turkey. Same thing with my Father and FMIL they both quit cold turkey about 8 mths ago. She still wants a cigg every day but my dad isnt exposed to smokers so it is easier.

I am a quitter too! As of the new year. Cold Turkey! It's been the easiest thing ever. Not 1 urge. (and I smoked for 13 years!!) I can't believe I didn't do it sooner. I am not doing anything different though to help me. Just the thought of FH being happier that I not smell like ashtray anymore and onloy getting healthier makes it worth it and easy to do.
Good luck, it's well worth it.

Re: Stop smoking success?

I quit last September, used the patch and some gum (regular kind, not nicorette). I had tried to quit previously and failed but what made me quit this time was I just kept feeling worse and worse (I'm asthmatic) so I said this is it... no more. I still get a craving every once in a while, but you get through it and you will start to feel better.

I made FH quit on New Years Day, he started by using the patch but just never took to it so he went cold turkey. It's been stressful for the two of us lately, but we have both held fast. I'm very proud of him.

Now ladies, have any of you put on a couple pounds from quitting and if so, how did you manage to drop 'em???

Re: Stop smoking success?

I am still trying to get up my nerve to quit, am having SUCH a hard time letting go of my last few cigs. I 'only' have about 3 a day now, but cannot quit for anything. I think the problem is I quit for a year and then started again, so I dont feel like I can ever really stop. I really want to quit soon, as we are thinking of TTC next year, and I want to give my body a year to get the tobaco sh*t out.

I bought the Smoke Away program, and am going to try starting it this weekend. Hopefully this is my last smoking week. I need a quit buddy, my DH has given up on me after hearing me try and quit for 8 years!
