One of my bridesmaids asked me if she is allowed to bring a 'date' to the wedding, which of course would be ok, buut... she isn't even dating anyone, and when I asked her who she had in mind she was just like 'i don't know.' And chances are that it would be someone I have never even met before. I don't really like the idea of having to pay for a stranger to eat at my wedding, and FH doesn't like it either.
How would you feel about this?

Well i am inviting everyone with a guest so i know there will definitely be people there that i don't know...Even for e-party coming up there are people who rsvp'd with a guest that i dont know...Personally I am fine with it, but its by preference so whatever makes you happy.

Honestly, I wouldn't have any problem with it. I invited everyone of age with a guest regardless if they were dating anyone or not. I think this should be especially true for your BP. I had some people that I didn't know at my wedding, it was no big deal at all!!

we're doing the same.... everyone 21+ is being invited with a guest, so there are sure to be a lot of people that we don't know! we don't mind

i agree. IMO if ur going let someone bring a guest I don't think its right to tell them who they can/can't bring (within reason, meaning they cant bring an ex of urs or something like that). If ur worried about who their bringing then tell them they can't have one.

Re: 'Strangers' at Your Wedding
I have a similar problem. I am inviting some of my friends with guests, but they all know that my FH and I are paying for everything ourselves and are really trying to keep the list down. Most of my friends have been very sympathetic towards our situation and the single ones are just coming by themselves.
My cousin Samantha has told my best friend she is going to take her friend Lauren with her to the reception. I would have ablsolutely no problem with this if they were a couple or were seeing each other or whatever, but they are not she is just a friend whom I have never met.
In some ways I feel like my cousin thinks this is like prom where it can just be a free for all, but I'm really not feeling it.

Re: 'Strangers' at Your Wedding
I invited everyone in my bridal party with a date.
The only people that I invited without dates were my cousins and my brothers friends, mostly because none of them had girlfriends and they are all a bunch of 20-22 year old guys. They're family...they don't need dates.
The cousins that did have girlfriends I invited the girlfriends too.
All of my friends were invited with dates.

Agreed...you have to decide guest or no guest off the bat and if you decide yes, it cannot be with the 'only if I know them' clause...thats not really fair to your friend

Re: 'Strangers' at Your Wedding
maybe she asked in the event she started dating someone..a lot can happen from now to your wedding.
I wouldnt mind, especially a BP member. I'm not having everyone sit together at a BP table..while their guest are elsewhere..No sense in making them feel 'alone'

Re: 'Strangers' at Your Wedding
There are bound to be some 'strangers' at your wedding, at least you'll know this one isn't a crasher! If you agreed to let her bring a guest, she should be able to bring whoever she wants. (Of course there are exceptions....an old boyfriend of yours....)

Uh oh. This thread makes me a little nervous: both FW and I have decent sized families and lots of people we both consider friends (not just acquaintences), and as a result of that, we're doing +1s on a case by case basis. I love my friends and family, and want them to enjoy themselves, but if people I care about can't come, guests don't get an automatic plus one.
Or does that make us crazy?

Re: 'Strangers' at Your Wedding
I think you need to give your adult guests the option to bring a date to the wedding, even if it's someone you don't know.
HOWEVER - I think single adults (not dating anyone) going to weddings should only bring a date if they won't really know anyone else at the wedding. That's how I handled it. I wouldn't want the bride and groom to pay for a random person to be there.
But if they want to bring someone, they should have the option.

This is a little different. You and FW decide who you want to invite with a guest. However, once you invite people with guests you shouldn't dictate who that guest should be.

Many of my BM’s who are single have asked this same question . . . one of whom is not even dating anyone at the time I even had one go as far to ask me if her damn date could ride in the limo with us

Re: 'Strangers' at Your Wedding
I'm more worried about the absolute JERK my friend is dating coming. I cannot stand him - he's rude and disruptive and downright mean... but I cannot uninvite a BM's boyfriend.
I wish I could find a way that I at least didn't have to have him at the RD...

Re: 'Strangers' at Your Wedding
Not one single invitation I sent out said 'and guest' on it. Did single people bring guests? Yes, if I could identify the guest by name so as to include it on the invitation. There was one 'stranger' at my wedding - and that was b/c someone failed to RSVP and then showed up with an uninvited guest an hour into the reception.

We're trying to draw the line at serious enough with the person that they could bring them if the wedding was tomorrow. We hadn't thought about the whole 'knowing no one there' thing, as most of our friends and family know each other at this point. Which isn't EXACTLY dictating who the guest is, but in reality, it kind of is.
I'm just stressed b/c our guest list is present 230 and we don't want the wedding to be bigger than 200ish. yikes, this is a whole new kind of agita.
