The past few months, I have been feeling extremely irritable and stressed to all hell at work. I want a vacation really bad. I have accumulated about 52 days in the past few years. I have a GREAT relationship with my boss but still I am afraid to ask for next week off. I just feel it's too short notice. I really need it and I don't think he would have a problem with it but the last thing I need is to look irresponisble in front of him- I am paranoid. Do you think I should just ask him? I really NEED it! Last vacay I had was in November. How should I ask him?
***UPDATE*** So, After three days of pondering- I asked him. I only asked for a few days off. I waited it out to see how I felt during the week. This week hasn't been too bad and I figured a couple of days will do considering Memorial Weekend is coming up and I am taking a couple of weeks in July. So, he was really cool about it and told me to make sure my assistant knows what is going on and yadda yadda. Now, I have a few days I can look forward to. Yay!

Seriously, just ask. If he says no...too short notice, then ask him how long notice he needs...then ask for a week with enough notice. Good Luck!!!

If you need some time off really soon, and a it isn't enough notice for him to take off a whole week, try to negotiate and get a 4-day weekend also, with a week further downt he road.

I would definitely ask him. And if you can't get a week soon, then maybe you can take the next available week and you'll have something to look forward to Good luck and let us know how it goes

Just ask, the worst that can happen is that he'll say no.

Re: STRESSED!!!!!!! NWR
If you have a good relationship I would be COMPLETELY honest and say that you are feeling super stressed and need some time to yourself before you explode!!
Hopefully he will be understanding (which I'm sure he will!!!)
Good Luck--let us know what happens!

Re: STRESSED!!!!!!! NWR
I still haven't asked him.
I am such a chicken $hit. But I will. He seems like he is really busy. I'll ask him when he comes back from lunch- he will be in a better mood then.

Re: STRESSED!!!!!!! NWR
if you feel that bad about next week, try asking him for 2 weeks from now. most employers respect atleast a 2 weeks notice. they gave me these days...i'm taking them. you don't want to loose your time. could you send an email about it first?
