Stressed over Rabbi situation - vent - long

Okay, here goes:

My FI's mother is a principal of a Hebrew School. Really connected into Jewish Temple society. She searched pretty hard to find a rabbi for us, and I didn't care that much about it. She found this guy, said he was really cool, he plays guitar and likes animation. He also has taught at her temple. She asked him to do the wedding - we said 'sure.'

Well, my FI and I met with this rabbi, and although he would be fine, he isn't quite what we want. He didn't ask us ANY questions about ourselves, just went on with what seemed to be his oft-repeated speech about weddings and marriages. I'm sorry, I'm a Jamaican converting to Judiasm - you'd think he'd want to know something about us and the way we met, how we plan on living Jewishly, etc. Also, and this is relatively small, he's conservative, and so our Ketubah (marriage contract) would be more traditional than we'd like and he doesn't seem amendable to the idea of short vows placed in the ceremony, which is something we wanted to do. Also, he's expensive - our FILs are paying, but still.

It's 95 days to the wedding. We've contacted a few other rabbis, and one could do it. She's a little less expensive, and seems to be much more open to the things we want. She might be *too* liberal though. We're meeting with her soon.

We've told my FI's mom about our concerns about this guy, but she's convinced that he'll be better the next time we met him.

So, I don't even know my question. It's kinda like - should we stay with the current guy - he's nice enough, and he works with my FMIL. I'm wavering on the importance of the vows - our Ketubah will be read out loud and I'm thinking maybe we could read some of it - the english is very beautiful.

With the other rabbi, the ceremony wouldn't be too different - just the addition of the vows and the hebrew on the ketubah would be less tradtional, basically. And we'd probably *like* this person more on a personal level - she does weddings all the time.

I just need to vent/ think out loud.

I think you are mostly worried about hurting your fmil. Let me tell you, most Jewish ceremonies are the same. They aren't long. If the guy has a good personality then he should be able to throw that in. Can you tell me who the rabbi is??? You can FM me...

Whew...I thought I was the only one having serious officiant issues this late in the game. We have gone from having a priest/rabbi combination to a JOP to an Interfaith minister...and I still not really comfortable with it -- I wish we could marry ourselves!

The only advice I can offer is that you choose whoever is going to make YOU and your FH happy -- his mom had her ceremony. It should be meaningful to the two of you -- that is the most important thing!

Of course, I'm the girl who hasn't told either side yet that we're using an interfaith minister because I'm afraid of the reaction, but...

Good luck!

I can give you the name of a few Rabbis one is reformed the others are conservative.

1. Rabbi Gellman (Temple Beth Torah)631-643-1200

2. Rabbi Buchelor (Dix Hills JC) 631-499-6644

3. Rabbi Moses Birnbaum(Plainview JC) 516-938-5865

4. Rabbi Lavin (Wantagh JC)516-826-6587.

I hope that this helps you, it is worth the try and all of these Rabbis are great in there own way. Did you convert Conservative or Reformed?

Good Luck

OMG sabella1231, don't tell them until the wedding day - imagine their surprise!

Thanks for the other names!

Yeah, I guess my issue is hurting my FMIL - professionally as well as emotionally, since she works with the guy and hunted for awhile to find him. And we did leave it up to her, it wasn't like 'make sure they do this and this and this.' We just didn't give too much thought into personalizing the ceremony - FI forgot that vows aren't normal in a Jewish wedding and I read that some rabbis allow them, so I thought we would be okay. Also, she did mostly try Reform people.

I'm converting Reform.

Thanks again everyone!

Rabbi Birnbaum was my sponsoring rabbi for conversion. He is so nice and sweet and so learned. He is going to be our officiant. Rabbi Lavin is also a very nice rabbi, he was one of my teachers during the conversion process. I would also try to contact Rabbi Androphy at the East Meadow Jewish Center, another wonderful man.

My parents belong to this temple. They have for 25 years, since it opened, and believe me, donated plenty of $$$ there. My mom called to ask Rabbi Gellman to marry us (DH is not Jewish), and the secretary said NO, he would not perform interfaith (we wanted a JEWISH ONLY ceremony, DH is not religious), and would not even put him through. Didn't even recommend anyone, try to help us out...anything. My mom and I were very upset. We found someone else to marry us.
Fast forward a year. My grandmother passes away. The Rabbi calls my parents to offer condolences, and my dad lets him know how upset I still am about the slight. Rabbi Gellman PROMISES my dad he would call me and apologize, and invite us to the podium during services to bless our marraige. That was over 2 years ago. Still waiting the promised call. I have not set foot in that temple since, and don't think I ever will again...I'm still very angry!

Sorry, just had to vent!!
