I want to have traditional music with a string ensemble. Will there be a big difference between a trio and a quartet? I would love to do the quartet but its $150 more and we are way over our wedding budget already. My FH says get a CD player but I really want it live. What does everyone think. Should I go for the trio to save or spend the extra money for the quartet?

Re: String quartet or String Trio?
i had a string trio at my wedding for my ceremony music, and honestly, it was just as beautiful as a quartet. i received many compliments on it, and i didn't think it made a huge difference. just check with the company to see if any music you want, may sound better with a quartet.
but like i said, a trio worked just fine for me!

Yes. The trio will be doing our outdoor ceremony and outdoor cocktail hour.

A string trio gives the same effect and will fit into your budget.

Re: String quartet or String Trio?
I'm debating the same thing myself...one company I talked to said that a quartet was needed for the amount of people we were having (250+) because a trio would not be heard. Another company said a quartet was only necessary if I wanted to add a different tone to the music and if I had more people and they couldn't hear the music...the trio would just play louder. Which made me smile because that means the other co was just trying to BS me.
I think it depends on the instruments you're using. Keep in mind that if you get a trio, the people at your wedding won't be listening to a quartet at the same time so they won't really be saying in their head 'this would sound better as a quartet'.
We'll probably get a flute trio..flute, cello, violin..which I think covers all the deep and high tones of the music. The quartet just adds a viola or another violin...not sure how much of a difference it would be.. HTH!
