we're planning the wedding for a saturday in August, and I've already tried town hall but they only have weddings on thursdays (near us) Lindenhurst, copiague area... I am willing to go to their location, we don't have a specific denomination. I'd really like to be able to find someone who can work with us & what we can afford, this is starting to really stress me. Any suggestions?>

Are you looking for a non-denominational officiant?

I don't know how much this costs, but maybe have a friend get ordained?!

@vppjzv Can you give me some more info? My mom wants my uncle to marry us. He's a minister in another state.

Thanks so much. I'll run it by my FH. That would save us so much money and another check.

yes, we'd prefer non-denominational, but are willing to use a religious officiant if its more convenient.

X-POST:
Yes it does, I'm doing it through the Universal Life Church.
If the church who does the ordainment is a recognized body by the state of NY, which ULC is, you CAN have that person sign the marriage license and NYS will issue a certificate. The town clerks of Riverhead, Babylon, and Brookhaven told me so. If you get married in NYC limits you also need to provide physical documentation/proof of ordainment, which can be purchased from the ULC website.
However, there IS a grey area. If the marriage was ever 'challenged,' either for an annulment or money or whatever, by any individual (not just the married couple) there's a slight possibility that, after much litigation, the marriage could be determined 'unlawful' due to the online ordainment. Historically court cases have been lost though, because there's usually too much evidence against proving that the marriage wasn't 'real.' But you will be issued a marriage certificate and will be able to change your name, combine insurance, etc. Again, the only time it would EVER come into question would be if someone was really fighting to prove you're not married or entitled to something.
We're still moving forward with our friend as the pastor, but you could always call a lawyer and triple check. We might go as far to go to the JOP on our 1-year anniversary, but we're confident in the legality of our marriage.
I would look into in more because Suffolk doesn't recognize it!
thank you both for your posts and info. I think I'll keep looking through local churches or officiants in the area. Don't want to take any chances with the online ordination. Congrats on your weddings :)

My boss is an ordained minister in Suffolk, and she performs weddings on occasion. I believe it is recognized in our County.
