i just dont understand why a simple centerpiece that i want costs so much money. Does anyone know of any student florists or anyone who does this as a side job who won't charge me so much?

Scout out a boces that has floral design classes.
Have you tried Verbena and all my heart they are pretty reasonable? Tell these florist what you want to spend maybe you can get the same look with less flowers or other flowers. What I did was a mixture half and half. Im doing rose and hydrangeas (I may have spelled that wrong) centerpieces instead of all roses and then floating candles with roses in them with rose petals on the tables that way I get a mixture. The room looks romantic and you save money.

You can also shop around for florists and get a better price.
Also what kind of flowers are you using, its not just about how simple something is...It depends on the type of flower and what they cost. If you are getting a flower that is out of season or some exotic type flower that is harder to get then it will cost more money.

If you have a high school near you that keeps a greenhouse, they will usually do that kind of thing and they can actually get credit for it! I have a friend who teaches HS who runs the FFA program there, and she does all kinds of events with her students for a great price! Im not sure where on LI you might be able to find one though...
