Has anyone had any experience with using student photographers or musicians? I figure with all the great art schools in NY it must be a possibility!

Think its a great idea! I was worried to use someone when it came to pictures but I think a cocktail musician would be cool, CW post has alot of theatre and dance maybe you could try there.

My FH works in the art industry and does freelancing for Cooper Union. He checked around and got no responses since we were looking for the same thing. You can try sending an email to Cooper Union, Pratt or Parsons to see if they can help you out with a photographer. We booked an independent photographer who is pretty inexpensive. You check view her stuff at http://www.lovekatz.com Hope this helps!

It can work either way. You could get fabulous work by creative artists on the cheap or you could get a flighty student who has no reputation to protect no showing up on your wedding day.
I would only go this route if you wouldn't be terribly upset by the latter.
Remember: You get what you pay for.

Re: Student Photographers/Musicians
The one thing you should not take a chance on is your photos. With a non-professional there are NO legal contracts and no way to know for sure what you will get. What if the student decides that he would rather go out with his friends then shot your wedding a week before? You have no recourse. Honestly I would not take this chance just to save some money. Hire a professional freelance photographer but not a student. I am not saying all students are irresponsible, most are probably dependable BUT again, do you take that chance?
Music can be the same thing. I would ask for recommendations before hiring a student musician. For your ceremony it would be fine since even if they didn't show up or there was a problem it would be okay. But your reception? Your music can make or break your reception. I would proceed with a lot of caution on this.
