student teaching

I'm fininshing my BA at NYU and am thinking of getting certified to teach English to high school students. One of my major concerns is how I can do student teaching since I work full-time during the day.

Those who attended teacher ed programs, was student teaching every day for one semester, or a few days spread out over a year?

Thanks!

Re: student teaching

you really can't get around this...

my student teaching was everyday...all day for 2 months...8 weeks...but I think things have changed since I started...and each school has a different philosophy...

i would think its about 300 hours...

at one school I worked at the student teachers cam in every day for 2-3 periods every day the entire semester...20 weeks...

so you'll have to look into where you want to complete it

I did every day for one semester, but you might be able to find alternative programs. If you teach in NYC, for instance, they sometimes count your first 2 years working as a full time teacher as student teaching also.

Re: student teaching

When I was in undergrad, I took all the classes I needed for my cert except I didn't student teach. 4 years after grad I talked with one of my professors. He arranged it so I student taught down here on LI (I went to Geneseo) like a regular student. My job (great company) let me change my hours.

For in the spring semester last year I student taught from 7 AM - 2 PM then worked from 2:30 PM until 9:30 PM during the week and all day Saturday so I still had 40 hours at my job but student taught for 16 weeks. I did it every week day the entire time that school was in session during the spring semester. It was TOUGH but I am so glad I did it. Now I am getting my master's, which my company pays for. As soon as I put in my obligatory year bc they are paying, it's off to teaching I go.

I don't think you can get around the student teaching and I don't think you can do it only part time. But maybe you can. Check with NYU or whomever you are going to work with for your student teaching - they can help.

When I student taught, one guy came in a couple of periods each day, and did it for a year. I don't know what school he was working through though.
