Holiday Time in Manhattan

The city is always exciting, but never more so than during the holidays. We have compiled a few of the most popular annual events and shows taking place this month that help kick off the season. Call ahead to confirm dates, times and fees.

Lincoln Center’s Annual Tree Lighting Celebration. Featuring family entertainment by the Big Apple Circus, excerpts of The Nutcracker presented by students of the American Ballet Theatre and of course, the lighting of the tree. 4:30-6pm Nov. 29. Free admission. Josie Albertson Plaza at Broadway and 63rd St., NYC. 212-875-5108.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the high-kicking Rockettes, the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, a Living Nativity and Santa’s Magical 3-D Sleigh Ride. Nov. 4 through Jan. 2, 2005. Tickets $36-$90. Call Ticketmaster or check out the Radio City Web site for a complete show schedule and reservations. Ave. of the Americas between 50th and 51st Sts., NYC. 212-307-7171. www.radiocity.com.

Santa Land at Macy’s Herald Square. Animated scenes dress the windows, and Santa himself holds court on the 8th floor ready to hear the wishes of hopeful little visitors. After visiting the jolly old elf, head to the Holiday Land Playhouse for a presentation of Percy the Poor Little Penguin, an original show featuring the Nicholas Coppola Marionettes. Visit Santa Land from store opening until 9pm daily, Nov. 26-Dec. 23. On Dec. 24, Santa must leave at 5pm to begin his rounds. The puppet show is presented throughout the day, 10am-6pm. Call for a complete schedule of show times. Admission to Santa Land is free. Tickets for puppet show $2.50 per person; on Mondays, proceeds benefit Make-a-Wish Foundation. Broadway and 34th St. 212-695-4495.

Winter’s Eve at Lincoln Square, a giant neighborhood happening, takes place immediately following the Lincoln Center tree lighting ceremony and includes free entertainment, family fun and kids activities on Broadway from 61st-68th Sts. 6pm Nov. 29. There's also the Nutcracker at New York City Ballet.

There's a Christmas craft fair in Union Square every year.

Don't forget the windows at Saks!
