Hi girls. Last night I was driving home and the light changed yellow. I was going a little to fast to stop, so I went through it. Yet, just as I did it turned red and that little camera thing-a-majiggy clicked at my car! So now I am so afraid, I will be opening up my mail one fine morning, and there will be a nice ticket in my name......
Does anyone know how sophisticated these cameras are. Has anyone ever got caught by one? Thanks, Denise
P.S. I am a good driver. I basically just went through it as it turned red. That camera wasted no time going off.....

Re: Stupid cameras in Traffic Lights ARGH!
Sometimes.......... They get you.. Sometimes not..
I saw the camera flash one time in BKLYN and never a ticket :)
One time off to the beach I blew the yellow didn't see the flash and I got busted..
I think the camera's are very tempermental...
The ticket was 75 bucks Ahhh.. But no points!

Thanks Theresa. You made me feel better. So there is a chance I won't get busted.
I'm still waiting....from the flash I saw in July....
but I think I may have been ok...since like you it was a close yellow

Re: Stupid cameras in Traffic Lights ARGH!
I got a ticket once last year, and it totally sucked, cause if I stopped, I would have been rear ended. it was my first and only (knock on wood) ticket, and I was so pissed. Oh well. They send you the actual picture of your car in the intersection, and a closeup of the license plate. The fine was like $100, but I think it might have gone up. It doesn't count against your license though, since they can't prove who was driving. Side note about the cameras, which I heard from a friend, so I'm not sure if it's true, but it explains why some people get a ticket, and some don't. The film and pictures are really expensive, so the city rotates which cameras are actually taking pictures. They're all equipped to take pictures, but one week one camera might be taking pictures, and the next week, it's just flashing. So, you might not get the ticket, here's to hoping!

I know a friend who was caught running a red light with one of those cameras...she fought the ticket, and got out of it, because that particular camera was not calibrated that day.
At that time (I don't know if this is true today), those cameras had to be calibrated everyday or every week...and this one that caught her wasn't! So she got out of the ticket!

What do you mean by Calibrated?

I guess like a scale...they have to be 'set' to make sure they are accurate.

Re: Stupid cameras in Traffic Lights ARGH!
But how did she know to argue that they were not calibrated or did she just get lucky to go to court to fight the ticket and the judge looked into it to see if the camera was calibrated??

Re: Stupid cameras in Traffic Lights ARGH!
I got one a couple of months ago, I thought the camera wouldn't work, but it did for me, actually FI was driving my car. We just got the ticket in the mail 2 weeks ago. I couldn't believe how clear the pic was, and they took it from 3 angles so I couldn't even fight it I can tell you the fine was $50-and they do not take points off your license and it doesn't affect your insurance(they can't prove who was driving) which was a major concern of mine. Good luck maybe you won't get one, I have heard of people seeing flashes and they never get a ticket

I'm not sure how she did it...her father is a lawyer, and I'm sure he looked into it.
I'll ask her for the details if you end up getting one, just be sure to FM me if it does happen.

i've never been caught by one, but since i live on a corner where there is a camera, i see people get 'flashed' like a million times a day! i wonder how many actually get a ticket, though!

Re: Stupid cameras in Traffic Lights ARGH!
Ok.. im gonna sound like a mother hen now.
Let me first say what i feel honestly about: 'I did NOT buy a sports car to go speed limit'
Ok.. now lets get the meat.. I've been T-boned at a light. People 'just making the yellow'. Honestly they meant no harm, I believe. I spent hours in an ER and $3000 in damages to my car.
My FH laughs at me. I drive 90mph on an open highway with only a few cars around. I STOP at yellow lights if I see them out far enough. Why? It's just not worth it to me. I've had 5 car accidents only one was my fault (rainy weather very minor).
The idea is, if you can't clear the intersection, meaning the back end of your car is COMPLETELY PAST the intersection, then you shouldnt try it. It drives me nuts in New York how many people run yellows. I don't know what your situtation was. I know I've been forced to run a yellow in wet weather when I didn't notice it turn yellow and knew my car wouldnt stop.
Most of the time though, the speeds shouldnt be so bad as to cause you to 'have' to take yellow. I know I sound like im whining or lecturing, but as an Ex Claims person for Auto stuff, I've seen tragic things from small mistakes.
People honk at me if they are on my @ss and think I'll take the yellow. I don't care. Fine hit my car, I need a new paint job anyway. I also pump my brakes before if I know it's gonna be one of 'those' yellows. Usually freaks out the driver enough behind me that they aren't going full blast when we get to the light.
OK *off my soapbox*

Re: Stupid cameras in Traffic Lights ARGH!
I think I read that some are 'fake' lights that they blink but no camera in it. Its' to fake people out and make them stop, I guess.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that's what the article I read said.
I think they also take into exception those that are in the middle of yellow lights.

Was it a camera or one of those lights that's set on a timer and flashes like a camera?

Re: Stupid cameras in Traffic Lights ARGH!
Xelindrya, first off where do you get off f*cking telling me how to drive. Who the h*ll do you think you are?? Huh???
Just kidding! Gottch ya, didn't I?
In all serious, you are absolutely right. I misjudged, I thought I could make the light. No excuses. I have to be more careful! Its funny last night I made sure I went slow to that light and it turned red again and I was prepared. Well my DH was coming home from picking up dinner and saw me sitting there. He called me, 'his good little driver'! :) Well I will just keep my fingers crossed, and be more careful. '
Kathy, Thanks, I will let you know if anything comes out of this.
