Stupid Question????

Here`s a stupid question......... With all this talk about tipping, what exactly is the 18% gratuity that is added on before taxes and who/what is this for?

At our place, everyone was covered under the service charge except the Maitre`d.

Not so stupid question

The 18% on mine is for the wait staff, bartenders, valet parking, coat person. It does not include the maitre'd or the bridal assistant.

I posted another message under 'Suggestion: Tipping at reception hall'. The waiters, bartenders, coat-check etc. do not receive this gratuity.

We questioned this when we signed our contract and we were told that is who it is for. I realize that the way the industry works tips are included as part of your salary so no one may be handing them the tip per se, but they are getting it. It would be way over our budget if on top of the required gratuity we had to then tip all of those people.
