Stupid question re: UTI

Stupid question re: UTI

Ok, this is probably going to sound really dumb, but I think I have a UTI, and was wondering - do you go to the gyno for this, or just your regular doctor? I've never had one before, but I called my insurance's nurse line last night and they said that it sounds like that was what I have and I really should go to the Dr. today, but I'm not even sure who to call.
TIA!

You can go to the regular doctor. They usually prescribe cipro

You should go to a urologist. I used to work for one and can give you a few names if you want.

You can go to either one. I have been to both before for UTI's. I recommend the regular doctor though, b/c the gyno may check you while the doctor will just take a sample. Feel better! I know how sick they make you feel. Take care!

My regular dr. always gave me antibiotics for it. I don't remember using cipro. Go soon--once the infection spread all through my body because I put off going.

I would go to your internis. He/she will give you meds and make sure you drink lots of cranberry juice.

You can go to the regular doctor, they just need to do a urine test.

Re: Stupid question re: UTI

ASK FOR A URINE CULTURE, so they can identify the bacteria and the culture will tell you which antibiotic has the highest rate of killing that particular bacteria.

Common bacterias associated with UTIs are
e-coli and enterococcis.

In my experience, Cirpo XR 1000 has been one of the best antibiotics for e-coli.

They may want to just put you on a broad spectrum antibiotic, but I'd ask for that culture.

(I've battled many UTIs!)

Thank you! I knew I could count on the people here to help! I just called my Dr a while ago to make an appt - but they aren't calling me back.
I don't know how those of you who get them often deal - I couldn't sleep last night and I don't even think I have a particulary bad one (no real pain, just sooo annoying!!! )

I've had different symptoms with different ones. A few times I had sharp pains in my side, coupled with blood in the urine and frequent urges to go. I don't know if you are at work, but a heating pad on my stomach helped a bit. Also, drink the cranberry juice! 100% juice, and drink a whole gallon if you can! My grandmother has fought them off once they started this way.

Re: Stupid question re: UTI

if you have no pain consider yourself very lucky!!! UTIs can be SOOOOOO painful!!!

there is also an ove rthe counter treatment if the doctor is taking too long to get back to you.. you still need to see the doc but it helps with the symptoms until you get to see him...

I gets lots of UTIs and one of my coworkers suggested AZO. You can get it at any drug store. You should still go to the dr, but in the meantime you can take this, and drink lots of water and cranberry juice if you can.

Yea! The Dr finally called me back so I'm going later this afternoon.
One more question though, once you are on antibiotics, how long does it usually take before your symptoms start to go away? I'm going to be so miserable if I can't sleep again tonight.

Because you are quite symptomatic, your MD should give you two medications:

1. antibiotic to kill the actual infection

2. a med that numbs the urinary tract (your urine usually turns bright orange from this, it's ok, but you need to drink a lot of water)...once you take this med., you will not have any discomfort shortly thereafter (maybe 30 minutes)....but be sure to keep taking your antibiotic, the antibiotic is the only thing that will KILL the infection...other treatments such as this numbing pill will only suppress your symptoms, but not get rid of the actual infection.

Those pain pills were great!

Feel better!
