Stupid question re: UTI

Original post by oneday

Ok, this is probably going to sound really dumb, but I think I have a UTI, and was wondering - do you go to the gyno for this, or just your regular doctor? I've never had one before, but I called my insurance's nurse line last night and they said that it sounds like that was what I have and I really should go to the Dr. today, but I'm not even sure who to call.
TIA!

You can go to a regular doctor for this, they will take a urine sample and probably give you antibiotics right then and there..They dont have to wait for the culture to treat since it takes a day or two to get it back. You can take the over the counter azo for the pain, but dont just take that without also getting the antibiotic or you could wind up in the hospital with a kidney infection since that pill does not treat the infection, it just covers up the pain. Feel better!

I read this post in the beginning of the week and guess what-I have all the symptons of one-just started today. I've never had one b4, so I'm guessing this is it!
I can't go to the doc-besides being deathly afraid, I have no ins-doesn't kick in until August 1st. I can't really take anti biotics anyway bc they torture my stomach, so it's cranberry juice for me!!!

Do not mess with your kidneys! Go to a doctor ASAP!
I had a bad UTI once with blood in my urine, and it was awful. They gave me Macrobid. It made me sleepy but it worked well. Feel better!

Called my doctor before and they said they couldn't take me bc I didn't have insurance. I have a fear of doctors so I can't go to any others...I'm going to wait a couple of days n see how it is.
Thanks tho

Be careful!!! Last summer at this time I got a really bad UTI.. I have no insurance and I am scared of Doctors so I pushed it off... well in 3 days it got worse and turned into a bladder infection!!!!!!!!
I was in and out of the hospital for a week.. had to have a catheter (sp?) put in me 3 times and I was in the worst pain of my life ( and I have given birth!!!)
now instead of the $300 cash gyno visit ( my gyno took me without insurance as long as I paid with cash/credit card at the visit ) I wound up with very $$$$$$$$$$$ hospital bills! and by the time I had gone to the gyno it was past the point that whatever they gave me was useful. So I had to pay the gyno visit... tuns of prescriptions and a hospital bill.

ETA and it wasn't like I totally ignored it I went to a pharmacy and asked someone what I could take to help.. I bought a few things and it still got worse.

That's actually how my great-grandmother died (she was 95, so I am sure you wouldn't...). She had a UTI that was ignored and it spread to her blood and became an untreatable blood infection.
