That is so sad! I can't believe that's even happening in today's world. Well I can believe it, but I don't want to.

I completely disagree! I work in a bank and I think it is a very stupid thing to do. It is terrifying to have a bank robbery and this old jerk thought it was a good idea to do that to that poor teller! Too bad he didn't plan for his future. That poor teller is probably scared and confused and all sorts of messed up. I don't care if it was only $80. It was a dumb thing to do and I don't feel sorry for him at all. He shouldn't get to get his SS money now. That teller might quit because of what happened and we are suppose to feel bad for him, NO WAY! I asked everyone at work and they all feel the same way I do. He is an idiot, and I think he should be punished for it, not sent to a nice white collar prison until he gets his money! That's BS!

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel
I agree with you that what he did was stupid and I do feel for the teller. She was probably terrified, but I guess the point is that he felt he had to this to survive. So his act was stupid, but the reasoning is aweful.

Ok true, but there are other ways. It never said if he was disabled or something that would make us think he couldn't get a job. Plenty of people, young and old, get min. wage jobs and survive. What he should have done was asked for a job there instead of robbing it.

Totally! I worked as a teller for a year and I was terrified to think that our bank could be robbed! There are plenty of ways he could have gotten by - minimum wage or more. Plus, don't our tax dollars now pay for him to sit in jail because he 'didn't know what else to do'? Or no?...

That is a very sad story. But I don't understand how he only got 3 years. I thought bank robbery was a federal crime with a minimum punishment.

Well that's the F--- up part of it. We will pay for criminals, but somehow we wont pay for someone who was laid off two years before retirement. Age discremination is real and I can imagine how hard it would be for him to get a job.

Yes there are minimum paying jobs out there, but honestly how many of us would be able to survive on minimum wage. Not many I bet.

What a crazy guy... I don't feel too sorry for him... at least if he worked a minimum wage job he'd be making an honest living... now he's cheating the system... I can't believe he actually followed through with an idea like that... there are better ways to make money to live than to get arrested and go to prison so that someone else will take care of you... and I do feel much worse for the teller, that's got to be scary.

Or he could get 2 min. wage jobs, or move in with a relative or someone to save money. Or go on welfare or something that is not CRIMINAL!!!. So what does this mean? Anyone having hardship should rob a bank then go to jail and have the tax payers pay for their stupidity?? LAME!!!

All that says is that our prisons are not tough enough on criminals. A lot of prisons are probably nicer than what some people can afford....decent food, TV with cable, work out gyms, and a roof over their head.
Not my personal choice, but I guess if you are crazy it may make sense to you!

That is terrible. Poor man. Imagine how desperate he must've felt to have to rob a bank . Just hope he has enough ss$ coming to him

Re: Such a sad story

What an interesting story. First of all, lets get the facts straight - this man is NOT a violent evil criminal. It also states that he was trying to find work but could only get odd jobs that clearly could not support him. Im sure he was in a desperate mind set which caused him to 'plan' a robbery and turn himself in. Its survival of the fittest. He knew that he could not survive financially on what he was bringing home.

Listen - Im not saying its right at all for him to do this but I dont feel this man is a danger to society at all. In addition, discrimination of all kinds is still VERY VERY prevalent. For those of you who think that its a dead issue you are very wrong. It breaks my heart that hard working people cannot earn a decent living here and resort to all kinds of obscure ideas to survive.

Its devastating to me and I hope that one day hardworking people can live out their dreams too - no matter their class, sex, age, race etc. Regretfully its not happening soon.

Lastly, it such a shame that these type of issues aren't addressed as often. I am a teacher and my children are always SHOCKED (so are the adults) when I tell them that more people are enslaved in this world today than at any other time in history. Too many issues we learn in school today are reportedly 'abolished' yet continue each and everyday.

How about the Rwandan Holocaust ???? Over 1 MILLION people were slaughtered in approximately 100 days. That happened in 1994. That’s not a typo – that’s 1994! But of course, we’re not learning about that in social studies.

Mass murder still exists. Slavery is still extremely prominent. Discrimination is still very real.

I am sorry that I have such an emotional response its just that it really hurts me to read these types of stories.

I was in my car the other day (driving in West Babylon) and I saw a man pushing a cart collecting cans. He was a black man, clearly disabled, extremely filthy and he was walking around collecting cans! I thought to myself, 'what is wrong with society that this man didn't have a fighting chance.' I didn't have any money on me but I pulled over and gave him a couple of bottles of water. He was very thankful and also very thirsty. He seemded like such a nice man. I gave him alot of credit because he was makining an 'HONEST' living but the truth remains - he couldn't make ends meet.

he should have worked for minimum wage.

now the taxpayers are paying for his food clothing and shelter

Re: Such a sad story

After reading the story and the responses my conclusion is that yes his actions were wrong and yes he in return caused a terrible thing to happen by severly frightening the teller(s) and other bankers as well. But I think that people really do forget how hard times really are. We maybe in our own world with our bills, weddings, families and yes those are our firstmost thoughts and our responsibilities. But after 9/11 and the war, jobs being sent over seas, people loosing their homes to Forclosure, jobs,Eron (all those people loosing their retirement money) Now we have elderly people going back to work not b/c they are bored they cant afford health coverage and live! I saw an elderly man bagging groceries at the supermarket. I felt so bad not b/c he was working but b/c after all these years a man of his age should be allowed the privillage of relaxing and taking it easy. Imagine everythign that we all hold economically dear you cant say what you wouldnt do to make ends meet. We all watch the news and are affected by what we see, but like I always say I'm guilty of this as well. We see it and it leaves our minds as soon as the commerical comes on.

Yes it was wrong what he did, I think because we all live within the NY region we dont get to see how the US itself is really holding up! Yes we see the occasions homeless person, but there are people in the US who do what he does just to be able to put food on the the table to feed their kids, People who shop at Second hand stores not to shop for retro-styles but because its what they can afford!

I again wont applaud this man's actions but what I will ask is What made him do that? Why did he feel the need to do something like this? Anyone ever see the movie with Denzel John Q, where he held up the hospital to save his son's life b/c the health insurance company wouldnt pay for his son's heart transplant. Think about it if you're single or a parent and you cant even make ends meet to put a roof over your head or food to eat! What would you do? Please Oh please dont say minium wage b/c if you had to live on what they paid you wouldnt be on LIW planning the wedding your are much less be able to honestly live!

That's my thoughts-
