Re: Suffolk Teachers...
Nassau pays more, but there are some Suffolk districts that are about the same. The highest paid Suffolk districts in order are Central Islip, East Islip, and Copiague

Nassau pays more, but I find the cost of living in Nassau to be more....so I think it evens out.

Honestly, it is next to impossible to find a godo teaching job on LI (i.e. tenure track). I would say wherever you might be offered one, TAKE IT! they're few and far between. the salaries are relatively average throughout the island, although i would say Nassau pays more.

FH is a city teacher (with his masters)
he actually had an interview for a nassau position and it was the same $. he decided not to take the second interview - because he has tenure in the city already and wouldnt if he took the nassau job.

Re: Suffolk Teachers...
I was a NYC teacher and now have a position in Suffolk county. Although the city pay is equal now, Long Island schools offer more opportunity to move up throughout the years and offer more 'steps'. If you can get a Long Island job, there are def. more advantages than city schools. The classes are smaller and it does pay more.
I live in Nassau and the teacher salaries are higher, but it does depend on the district.
