Sunday Afternoon MOB dress etiquette

Sunday Afternoon MOB dress etiquette

Is there a right or wrong way for the MOB to dress for a Sunday afternoon wedding in June? We are making our wedding black-tie optional and would have done a Sat night wedding, but this is way too expensive for us.

My Mom has already selected a full length gown... it's Vera Wang, and a little sexy, but classy. My MIL is shocked and believes it is not customary to wear a gown on a Sunday afternoon. She said that she thought a suit with knee length skirt was the appropriate dress for Sunday wedding. Is there a right or wrong?

There probably is a right or wrong. But the question is, who cares? My mom never asked me about any of this, as she knows I don't care. I have a Saturday night reception and my mom is wearing a knee length dress. She never does floor length. That's her. I don't care. And my FMIL is wearing a floor length gown.

And my bridesmaids are wearing black, in the Spring. I'm out of control!!!!! You have to figure out what works for you and not always go by what etiquette dictates.

I hear you. My FMIL and FGMIL (is that right for future grandmother in law?) turned up their noses at black and red being the colors for our Spring wedding. We had black and red picked LONG before a wedding date.
Whatever.

But, I can tell you that there will definately be some guests wearing black too.

Definitely go with what you want - my BMs are wearing a tea length black dress for a Sunday afternoon wedding in July. I have gotten many questions about black in July but I don't care! My girls are going to look elegant!

I'm having a Sunday afternoon wedding and the girls will be in cocktail length black dresses with a pink accent. I've always wanted black dresses. My aunt made a comment to my mom about my mom getting a long dress - she said she didn't think you wore that or strapless to afternoon weddings. I say, who the f cares!?!

My mom is wearing a full length gown to my wedding. How many times in her life will she get to wear something so fancy and formal? Who cares if its a sunday afternoon???
I hate that people think because its a sun. afternoon there should be no 'formal' dress. We are putting 'Formal reception' on the invitaitons so people understand they shouldn't be wearing khakis or work clothes to the wedding.

We're having a sunday afternoon wedding and my mom is wearing a full length gown and I am going to Strongly suggest that my FMIL do the same. Hopefully for me there wont be any issues with this.

I had a Sunday afternoon wedding. My mom, MIL, grandmothers, and aunts all wore floor length dresses. None of them looked out of place.

Your wedding - Your way!
.
No one ever asked your permission how to have their wedding. Do what makes you & FH happy - it will show in your pics years from now.

It really should be what you want and what your mother wants to wear. My sister got married in July (Sat night) and we wore tealength dresses as did my mother and she looked beautiful

i think you can do whatever you want-- no right or wrong. This is a special day for your mother and she most certainly deserves to do what she wants without being hasselled.

It what your mother wants to wear she is the MOB and must look nice as well; its still a wedding regardless of the day or time.

It is what makes each individual comfortable that is important. My mom hates her legs so she ordered a gown. My FMIL refuses to wear a gown in July. I said I don't care, just don't wear raspberry!!!!!!

Thanks for everyones' replies. This REALLY gives me some peace of mind. Oh, and BTW my FMIL commented that I shouldn't have black on a Sunday afternoon in June... but I decide to go all shades of amethyst because that's what I wanted to do.
