My brother just accused me of being pretentious and rude because I was wearing sunglasses indoors (I had just gotten in and hadn't even taken off my coat). He said I should take my sunglasses off immediately upon entering someplace and if I am talking to someone outside, I should take them off to talk. He says it is prententious and shows a 'couldn't be bothered' attitude.
I personally wear my sunglasses inside sometimes because it is too bright or I didn't bring my regular glasses and I need to see clearly. I also wear them on the LIRR so I can sleep (the overhead lights on the LIRR are so harse)
Any opinions on this? Does it matter to you?

i wear prescription glasses and have transition lenses (dark when you're outside, normal when you're inside), so for the first 20 mins i'm inside, my glasses look like sunglasses
not pretentious at all if you have sensitive eyes

Dude, if you just walked in, it's not pretentious! All the reasons you listed for wearing sunglasses inside are perfectly valid (sensitive eyes, harsh light).
I do think some people do it to be pretentious (like USHER at the Golden Globes... here's a ladder, please get over yourself) and then it's annoying.

If it's just for a few minutes while transitioning from outside to inside, it's no biggie. But when people leave them on inside all day long, then it's pretentious - to me it comes across as someone who can't be bothered to look people in the eye.

Mine are prescription and if I am running into a store quickly, I forget and I walk around with them.

if you just didn't get around to taking them off... no wouldn't bother me at all.
But I've seen these douchebags wearing their sunglasses on purpose inside at a mall, restaurants, and sometimes these places are dark. and also driving at night. THAT i think is ridiculous. Not really pretentious, but just stupid. whats the purpose? to look cool? c'mon

I basically kinda think it's pretentious. But for one exeception --
I was at a Bachelor party and there was guy there wearing sunglasses. I had never met him before and I figured it was his own thing. (Just something I wouldn't do myself.) He was cool anyways.
So my friend comes up to him and asks him, 'Are you Corey Hart?' ('Sunglasses at night' song from the 80's.)
The guy picks up his sunglasses from his face.. and he has only 1 eye!

sometimes i see it and it bothers me,, but then if you literally just walked into someone's home and had even taken your coat off yet, then i don't see it as being pretentious. i don't see why he attacked you on somethng so trivial. now i'd wear them just to piss him off.

it usually doesn't bother me but most of the time just annoys me.. that was until last week.. i had lasik surgery on my eyes and now they're really sensitive to some lights so i'll wear my sunglasses.. right now i actually have really light ones on cause the monitor is too bright.
i guess i'm just pretentious.

I have been thinking about it and I think he is insecure and he seems to think that everything is pretentious. Example: After years of drama classes in school, going away to college and working in an office with a lot of non-native New Yorkers, I have pretty much lost my LI accent (I actually never had much of one because my mom is not from NY and I talk like her). My brother thinks I sound pretentious when I talk.
I am having fun reading how many of you don't think of it as a big deal.

In my opinion:
if you just walked in -- not pretentious (really come on!!)
on the LIRR -- not at all pretentious!!
Indoors just because 'it's too bright in here for me' ... um, yeah, pretentious.
My mom does it all the time and I tell her how rude it is. Once she and I and my DH went out to breakfast and she didn't take them off the whole time because 'it was too bright' inside IHOP for her. I told her she looked obnoxious!

I have one professor who teaches class with her sunglasses on...it is so irritating! However, I dont' think she does it on purpose..she's just really scatterbrained!
It doesn't bother me if you just came in the house, or if you're walking into a store from the outside. However, I hate talking to people when they have sunglasses on b/c I cant see their eyes.

That's totally not a big deal, esp since you still had your coat on! I think your brother is tkaing out his own insecurities or whatever on you! Sometimes I wear sunbglesses inside b/c I get migraines!
